My understanding of that verse is, what Jesus has done in your life is HIS story.  But what people do WITH what He has done in their life is THEIR story.  Combining the two means as it says in Revelation 12:11 By the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony they defeated the devil.  Its a bit like a double-barrelled shot gun.  Shot number one: what He has done.  Shot number two: what you have done with what He has done.  One does not come without the other.

Stevie:

We wouldn't have a testimony if it wasn't for HIM, would we????  Our greatest testimony of all is that he gave HIS life for US....

Praise God and thank you for sharing!  I for one used to live in the shame and then My Pastor shared a sermon once and it convicted me.  He shared that God takes us through things so we can help others although we stumble and fall It is what we do with it, that is when God gets the glory or we let the enemy have the credit. If we live in the shame the enemy gets the credit, but when we share our story God gets the Glory.  It is never comfortable when we screw up but if it helps a brother or sister not to have to go through the same thing then Praise God!!

I stick by my double-barrel shot gun approach. The reason the devil is so active is because only one half of the testimony is told.  What we have done WITH what God has done with some people is yet to be told.

Dear Mary,
I so much appreciate this blog.  It is a timely word for me...  I just shared by testimony with a Sister, and we have grown a world closer because of it.  I will be sharing my testimony soon...  with all of you.  God bless you Sister:  I believe you got this 100 percent right!  Thank you for the content regarding the meaning of these words.  I stricken most by this:

"It is interesting to note that the root word for "testimony" in the Greek is "martus".  It is the same word from which we get the word "martyr".  A martyr is someone who died for what they believe and know to be true."

You know Paul preached like this, not by " cleverness of speech or by persuasive words" but by the power of his testimony for Jesus Christ through the enablement of the Holy Spirit:  We all should learn from the example of Paul, amen?

I will add that our testimony is also our cross...  He lifts us up when we lower ourselves dear Brethren.
