| This Present Moment |

In William Young's best seller "The Shack," the main character, Mack, has an interesting conversation with Jesus. Mack is reminded by the Lord that life is lived in the present moment. Jesus doesn't spend time with us in the future because, even though he can be there, we can't. He doesn't meet us in our past because we can't really be there either. It is in this present moment, and only in this present moment, that we encounter God.
I need this little reminder because I tend to focus on the future. (Calling it "strategic planning" sounds much better than admitting that I'm worrying.) When I do that I'm missing the enjoyment of the present moment. For example, if I'm watching my grandsons play at the beach but I'm thinking about tomorrow at the office, I'm can't fully enjoy my present moment with them.
If I'm sitting in worship on Sunday but I'm thinking about sitting at my desk on Monday, then I'm not fully enjoying my present moment with God. Maybe I'm the only one who wrestles with this little problem. Maybe not. |
