| Definition of a Christian |
|

| I used to think that the definition of a Christian was someone who believes in God. Come to found out a lot of people believe in God but don't care what he wants. Are they still consider Christians? I don't think so, don't get me wrong though I still believe that God loves them and that they can become a true Christian. I just don't think they are people we want non-believers to look at and think "if that's what they can do that so can I and still get into heaven." I have found a new definition that I thinks fits and means so much more than belief. I think a Christian is someone who wants to serve God, with all their heart, mind, soul, and strength. That is what I think a Christain is, not just someone who believes. |

Ashley,
You have figured out what a lot of Christians never figure out. Saying you believe in God is maybe the beginnig step of Christianity, but a very long way from being a Christian. There are a host of folks who believe in God, but have never accepted Christ..step 2. Ad of those that have gone to step 2, my personal experience is that less than 20% make it to where you are....CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
Most Christians can rattle off most or all of the 10 commandments. Many believe that as long as they don't disobey God on those, then they are good...again, a good next step, but still not there. God commands us to do many things, particularly throughout the New Testament. If God commands me to help my fellow man, to do something 'for the least of these', and I ignore that, I am sinnng just as much as telling a lie or stealing or any of the 'big 10'.
Hopefully your parents would not object, but if you get a chance, read UnChristian by David Kinnaman...it is a bit of an indictment of Christianity...not that Christianity is wrong, but that the practice of Christianity by so many does not follow the teachings of Christ. Perceptions are that we are hypocritical, intolerant, judgmental, insensitive to others opinions, etc. Why does that perception exist? IMHO, it is because most Christians have yet to figure out your blog here. If that surprises some, simply read some of the blogs here. Read them and ask if Jesus would make similar comments. Would Christ slander McCain or Obama? would he point fingers at the 'predatory lenders' as being responsible for the financial crisis? would he make some of the hateful comments we see too often even on this board? And if you are still not convinced, look at some of the everyday posts on more secular boards...and realize that the vast majority of Americans...those same posters...claim to be Christians.
God Bless You and Keep You. This was one of the most inspiring posts I have seen...and to come from a young person, gives me some hope.
