| Be A Belonger By Choice! |

One of our town's chief cheerleaders who has since passed away would often sign his letters to the editor of our local paper, "Burkeville by Choice." We certainly don't presume to be anywhere apart from God. However, within the mysterious sovereign will of God we are all given many choices in life and one that I believe we must choose is where to "belong" so that we can each become better and bolder in our beliefs and behavior. Yes, we need to belong to a good local church and like a marriage that takes commitment. It should not surprise anyone today that the marriage crisis is also effecting the church. Marriage, if entered into at all, is viewed too often as just a contract among friends rather than a covenant before God.
I am coming to believe that a church is only as strong as its marriages...our marriage to Christ as His Bride the Church and our marriage to our spouse as a husband or a wife. Some, like the Apostle Paul and many missionaries who have followed him, have a unique calling to share the Gospel as a godly single person with a singular vision on Christ and His Church. Thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ, our heavenly Bridegroom, the godly single person and the married husband/wife can all give glory to God! In any case, we must choose our relationships in life both at home and in the church. Being a belonger in both instances requires a commitment to love.
The new movie "Fireproof" coming out this weekend and produced by a good local church should once again remind the church and the world that marriage is a covenant, not just a contract.
Are you a belonger by choice? Are you married to Christ through loving a local church? If you are, be faithful to follow Christ through that local church in impacting your world with the Gospel. Are you a married husband or wife? If so, be faithful always to love your spouse and never forget the choice you made before God in marriage on your wedding day.
Be a belonger by choice...to love your church and to love your wife or husband!
