It's almost a law of nature to say that every ideology contains a few crackpots. Between the power of intentionally seeking out those crackpots and using the cutting-room floor for editing (after all, this has become an art form for the current drive in so-called "Reality TV"), you can sculpt anybody to say just about anything. I was reading on how the film went into production - they actually went in anonymously an interviewed people under the guise that this "documentary" they were doing was entitled "A Spiritual Journey" that was looking for an honest assessment of religious people.* It's in the spirit of their recently produced trash film Borat. _____________________________________ * Bill Maher himself said, "It was simple: We never, ever, used my name. We never told anybody it was me who was going to do the interviews. We even had a fake title for the film. We called it 'A Spiritual Journey.' It didn't work everywhere. We went to Salk Lake City, but no one would let us film there at all" (cited in P. Goldstein, "Bill Maher hates your (fill in the blank) religion", The Los Angeles Times (August 7, 2008), http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/the_big_picture/2008/08/bill-maher-hate.html). |
