| Here's a Question for You! |
|
| |
Does anyone else struggle with the desire to listen to un-Godly music from their youth or their pre-Jesus past? Or maybe the music is not necessarily un-Godly, but it still bothers you because you know that the musician/band itself is un-Godly or has an un-Godly lifestyle?
I was a teenager in the mid to late 70's, attending college in the early 80's, listening to what is now affectionately known as "Classic Rock." (LOL) Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Eagles, Van Halen, Queen, Aerosmith, The Police, Peter Frampton, Dire Straits, Boston, Kansas, Foghat, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Styx, Doobie Brothers, REO Speedwagon, Tom Petty, U2, Heart, Pat Benatar, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Santana, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, John Cougar Mellencamp, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, America, Fleetwood Mac...etc., etc. (You 40-something's know what I'm talking about!)

I love, love, love music!! I love the way it takes you back - to a time in your life, to a trip you took, to a friendship you had, to a teenage love or even a heartache. I love the way it can change your mood - uplift you, cheer you, even put you in a funk! There are very few types of music that I don't enjoy, but I especially love music that makes me want to dance, or some good ol' rock and roll with a jam-up electric guitar riff! Or an off-the-charts drum solo! (See below, LOL!)
I think that loud music and dance was my initial draw to leave the denominational church I attended (only hymns/background music on organ) and begin attending a church heavier into praise and worship music (all sorts of instruments! dance while you worship God!) I discovered, that at least for me, this type of music could take me into a deeper place with God than traditional church music could. Not only that...but they had a dance team! Suddenly, this 40-something had an excuse to dance without looking foolish - in church! Now I was no longer limited to just dancing in the living room.

The closer my walk with God, the more I want to listen to music that honors Him. I have discovered that I can listen to great music (with guitar solos that are off the chain!) by artists that love the Lord and try to live a Godly life, so my iPod has plenty of praise and worship music on it. I very seldom listen to music from my youth anymore, since I have found a "replacement" of sorts for it.
But every once in awhile....I just want to step back in time and remember being 16 again, and I break out the "Free Bird," "Walk This Way," or "Hotel California." But the Holy Spirit just won't leave me alone if I do (smile), so I quickly move back to my MercyMe, Jeremy Camp, or Third Day.
I guess it goes back to that old computer programming term...garbage in, garbage out. If I want to put out fruit, if I want to show the world Jesus, I need to feed myself in Godly ways - studying the Word, spending time alone with God, prayer, and yes, even listening to music that lifts Him up. If I put garbage in...garbage comes out.
Thoughts, anyone? |

| YES! i mean..maybe i dont listen to most of what you mentioned above...but my biggest "weakness" if im to be honest here..IS secular music...music is amazing..i love it..love the different styles and just everything about it...i have heard both sides of it..i have heard people come up with reasons and things to excuse it..and to reject it and like look down on those who do not constantly sing that awesome hymn "Amazing Grace" hmmm...i know when i was depressed i didnt listen to any Christian music..i just filled my mind with sad and depressing secular music..and i know that didnt help the condition and state i was in. but now that i am better, much more balanced...i struggle with it..is it sinto listen on occasion to un-christian music? is it a matter of personal conscience? i dont like giving excuses about anything i do..and i dont want to live under the impression that if im doing something wrong..but i believe its right. God says to hate evil...and i know i LOVE God, but do i HATE evil? mostly yes...but with things like this...its very hard for me..music is as much apart of me as my hazel eyes and kooky sense of humor..so its hard to let go...hmm...idk if this very looong comment made sense..as you can see, i dont have this issue figured out yet (^_-) |

| Me too Carol. But I've found that I've simply lost interest in secular music as I've grown closer to the Lord. Not that I don't like those old CDs anymore, I just don't listen to em. I'm sure that if I played them enough I would once again feel the irrepressible urge to listen to that music again. But I'm in a place now where it's like, it draws me away from God, so why do it?? (know what I mean?) I certainly don't mean to "judge" anyone's music tastes, this is just me being honest about where I'm at now....and I love being here, btw! |

I love music and yes I am of the same generation as you. I think there is a time of purification when we need to separate ourselves from it. I get bored with the worship, or Christian music for a while and will return to some secular stuff, but then I get bored with it too so I jump back to my Christian music. I have much to say about this and definitely don't want to take over your blog. But quite simply this: there is no way that we can justify some of the lyrics as Christians and say it is OK. Freebird...Lord knows I can't change. Well we do change and the Lord changes us....if any man be in Christ we are a new creature. Aerosmith...walk this way...talk this way....there is no way I would approve of my daughter or son's behavior that this song portrays. AC/DC...I am grieved that this music is now infiltrating the minds of my children and youth in my church...like Satan has poisoned yet another generation. Hells Bells there calling for you...I am on a High way to Hell...no I am on a Highway of holiness. VanHalen? Running with the Devil?.....The devil is running from me! LOL......I think you and I both know the answer to what you are asking. This music is poison to your mind and like it or not stays with us. I willl say, that we are commanded to take every though into captivity and bring it to the obedience of Christ. But with every bad song, there is a good song about life and there is wisdom to it...Tom Petty..."You don't have to live like a refuge great wisdom....38 special...hold on loosely but don't let go if you cling to tightly youre gonna loose control. Or Tom Petty again...The waiting is the hardest part....great Biblical truth lol.... John cougar...You gotta stand for something or youre gonna fall for anything...great wisdom...INXS..Devil inside..every single one of us devil inside...speaking of the flesh and the corrupt heart of man. So sometimes we have realize that we live in the world but we don't have to be of the world. One of my favorite past times is re-writing secular songs...Like Pour some sugar on me... Pour Your Spirit on me in the name of God, come on fire me up Lord, pour Your Spirit on me can't get enough. I'm saved it's true, from my head to my shoes...yeah LOL We have liberty in Christ, but we must not use the liberty we have for an occasion to sin. I guess you have to ask yourself if your are grieving the Holy Spirit. That music is part of us, our life, our culture but we do need to be aware of the philosophy that it teaches. Sex, Drugs, Partying, Excess, Rebellion etc... what fellowship has light with darkness...so we know that we should not listen to it, but I think if you do, you must bring it into captivity and to the obedience of Christ saying...Lord I can change...Running from the Devil, I'm on a highway to life etc...So there you have it. Hopefully I didn't take over your blog..but I hope it helps some. |

I LOVE Gospel Music - It lifts me up, makes me dance, makes me just have a fit sometimes... I have explained to my grandchildren several times why I listen to it. Having a teenager who is very ecclectic(sic) in his taste of music doesn't help. We get to a point where we need to hear music that not only makes us (flesh) feel good, but our spirit must feel good (rejoice) also. My soul soars when my Father is praised.
Great blog... |

| What we are is what we fill our lives with. If we are filling our lives with God he is going to come out of us but yet others will see Christ in us. As God transforms our lives into the godly women and men he so desires us to be he will begin to change us and take things out of our lives that we will no longer desire and fills us up with things of him. He has to work on our inner man and work out our salvation. He is desiring holiness and godliness from His people. He knows we have not yet achieved but when we yield to His Holy Spirit and ask to be changed of those things that are not of him, He will do that good work in each one of us. |

Carol, as usual, my response will likely be off-center for many here. I listen to a wide variety of music (virtually every genre except opera and show tunes). Love the music of Clapton, Bob Marley, Zep, Allman Bros. and many more.
I think it is an individual thing. If listening to music, watching movies, shooting pool, or any other activity pulls you away from your relationship with Christ, then it would make sense to avoid them, right? My personal relationship is where I want it to be. I also have a relationship with my wife...and relationships with my boys. Each has it's own components and each takes time. If music lifts me in a way that I am in a better mood, and improves those relationships, I can not see my God disapproving. Like any relationship, I don't believe Christ expects me to be 100% focused on Him. If so, how would I have relationships with others? How would I relate to others and share His word? For me, everything is about balance.
If any secular activities were to cause me to want to drink again, use drugs, etc., then I would obviously avoid those. From your comments here, I don't believe listening to Queen or Clapton or others would impact you in those ways. And if it lifts you, as you state, why the struggle? Enjoy the music...dance with Christ in your heart...and share the joy!
Btw, I have a collection of LPs and 45s...and a '58 Seeburg juke...my boys and I crank it up and have a lot of fun/family time listening to the music and playing air hockey. They like some of the 70s/80s groups, but also love the old Motown....Temps, Supremes, Lionel Richie, Wilson Picket, etc.
Blessings to All, pa |

Music is a struggle, at least for me, I have some oldies but goldies. And some times I like to reflect back, to a time in space..not to put on the old man, but to appreciate where God brought me from..now when I see, myself listening too much or too often, I go in prayer..! I can't say for sure it is right, but my music to me is like looking at, an old picture of myself, I know I can't go back, nor should I want to. But it does bring a smile to my face, just as some music, make me praise God all the more, cause some bring me to a place, I'd rather forget..All I can say, is pray on it..and stay away from this stuff they call music now days, the sound is the same, but the message is different. I love you..I was almost ready to write a book on your blog..(smile). See what that music does.. |

| Yes, we still listen to some music from the 70's. It do not change my walk with Christ. We are still a part of the world's system but our minds have been renewed in Christ Jesus. Jesus did not separate Himself. He dwelt amongst them. Let your light shine so others can see . We are transformed by the renewing of our minds. The world's ways will transformed to our ways in Jesus Christ. Amen |

| I echo the other comments made here. I truly have not been tempted to go back and play the oldies. Yet, every once in a while, I do hear them it is amazing what memories are brought forth. Just goes to show what a force music is, so I try and listen to God Glorifying things. I want my memories to be triggered by the word of the Lord, the songs based on it. |

Hey Carol, I'm in your generation of music lovers ;-) and I love that old music beat and raw emotion too...like Janis Joplin. But this poor soul was certainly not an example of a Godly life. I not only love her raw emotion and honesty but I guess I feel like she was a lost soul who really needed the Lord and I feel sorry that she died so young. On other singers, I like the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Creedance Clearwater, Gladys Knight and the Pips...I could go on and on. I mean I like the talent and the beat, but I don't dance ...It is just that though I love music, I do not go out of my way to listen to these tunes...in fact, I hardly ever listen to music on the radio or on CD .....and I love the old hymns too! All of this to say that I think some of us are more music lovers than others...and we struggle to varying degrees with it. It shouldn't surprise us that we love music. God made music and Satan was his number one musician until he wanted to be God. Now Satan uses music to destract and destroy...when we can..so the more we are in God, the less we will want to listen to what Satan promotes...It isn't because we can't (God gives us a free will) but the more we have of God, the less we want of the world. Those are my thoughts. Thanks for an interesting topic. God bless. |

If I listen to Carole King I cop a Carole King attitude. I went through a phase where I burned my music. Then I bought it again, Then I gave them away and then bought them again. Then thought giving them away means someone else is getting dragged into the same mess it would drag me into. That isn't an answer. I struggled then found that honestly this LAST time, pitched them and felt good. Like a book burning. It is sorta like wearing jeans instead of dressing up for work. You slump casually in jeans and sit a bit more proper in the right clothing.
I find when I feed my spirit holy music, I grow in faith. It is simply feeding my spirit food instead of a pacifier. |

I'm pretty lucky in this area. I grew up with the impression that Christian songs were nothing but sappy, over-produced, third-rate music with amateur lyrics. A few years ago I followed a nudge of the spirit one afternoon driving home from work and spun the radio dial looking for a local Christian station. Within seconds I stumbled onto the radio station that carries my then-future pastor's sermons and ultimately led us to our church. The music really surprised me with it's quality, and I've never moved the dial since. I'd put the talents of artists such as Steven Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, and Jeremy Camp up against anyone in any wing of the music industry. I can honestly say I never paid much attention to the lyrics of the non-Christian music I listened to. I can't NOT listen to the lyrics of Christian music. I'd buy a non-Christian album knowing I'd like only half the songs. Now I rarely find a song on an album from my favorite Christian singers that I don't get hooked on. As others have said, I still have my old music, but simply don't feel the urge to listen to it very often. When I do, I always feel a little let down because the enjoyment I used to have just isn't as strong, despite the fact that little if any of it is objectional in any way. Only Christian music simultaneously fuels my heart, soul, and mind. I can understand where you're coming from though, because while you have this problem in the area of music, I have that problem when it comes to books, particularly fiction. For example, I read almost every Stephen King book when I was in my 20s. I still love his imagination as a writer and would love to check in to see what he's come up with in the last few years, but I don't. I might have listened to non-Christian music without paying much attention to the words, but that's obviously not possible when it comes to books. Great discussion topic! |

Great Post Carol. and a good question, I find myself wanting to listen to Christian music more... but I think that God don't begrudge us to listen to other music, after all if you husband took you out for dinner, and they where playing music, he might want to dance with you. so that would be a time to listen to non-christian music. I think as long as we put God first, and do everything in small doses it would be ok. God has a way to make you feel convicted when He doesn't want you to do something. but of course the devil can do that to. just pray about it. He will let you know. |

Thanks Carol for a very thought provoking blog. My taste in music changed completely after I was saved, but that was just my personal experience. I believe we should be balanced in every area of our life and be lead by the Holy Spirit. I personally love Celtic Christian music. Lianna Klassen's "History Belongs - #5" ...a song for intercessors... is my favorite. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=154566055 |

I can't believe what a week I've had, both at work and home. I've hardly been able to touch base with any of my MC friends, or get back to this blog and respond to your comments, even though I asked for them! I did want to say one thing after reading them, I feel that the responses have confirmed for me what I have been feeling led to do for a year or more, and that's to burn all of my CD's that are negative in one way or another, i.e. the lyrics are sinful, or maybe the lyrics aren't bad, but I know that the musician(s) live an un-Godly lifestyle. Probably God would not lead everyone to do this, but I believe He is leading me to do it because music is a stronghold in my life. Like Juanita said above, listening to a particular musician can sometimes give you their attitude if you're not careful! I'd rather have Casting Crown's attitude than Van Halen's...can I get an "AMEN?!"
More later...I do want to resppond to all of you - there is some rerally great wisdom posted. Thanks everybody! |

Amen.....I'm hot for Jesus instead of hot for the teacher! LOL Or I'd rather listen to "American Dream" than "What these dreams are made of"
Praise God! Holiness is what God calls us to. When we hold on to something we love then can we really say that we love Jesus with all of our heart?
Great Blog but greater decision! Praise Him! I rejoice with you! |

Thanks Bro Todd! You are so funny! I LOVE all the lyric changes you've done on here:
"I'm hot for Jesus instead of hot for the teacher!" "I am on a High way to Hell...no I am on a Highway of holiness." And my personal favorite... "VanHalen? Running with the Devil?.....The devil is running from me! " I really get a funny visual with that one. You, as pictured above, chasing the devil himself, shaking your fist at him, calling out scripture to him. LOL.
You said rewrites are a favorite pasttime...I think I'll give it a try too. Thanks for the (as always) sound advice and wisdom. |
