| Embracing Mediocrity |

| Sometimes I wonder if we have embraced mediocrity as the norm for the Christian life. In 19 years as a Christian, I have seen many times when church leaders look at a church's financial report to see that giving is not keeping up with the budget. The leaders cry out to God in prayer and schedule a 4-part preaching series on tithing. Don't get me wrong, we should be giving generously to the work of God. However, I have also observed that church leaders can look at a report and see that it has been months since the church has seen a person come to faith in Christ and we can gloss over it as of no account. We can hear of fellow believers who go several days at a time without feeding on the meat of God's Word and we say, "Well, our lives are very buy." Our prayer lives can be non-existent, yet we dismiss is, "But American Idol is down to the final 2!" Fellowship with other believers is seen as a luxary for when we have more free time. The lack of tithing in our churches can cause us to cry out to God in sackcloth and ashes, but we seldom bat an eye when Bibles go unread, the prayer closet is abandoned, and fellowship is optional. I pray to God that we shake ourselves from our mediocrity and live lives for His glory! |
