| Makes me wanna puke! |
|
| |
| I work in a Christian bookstore and we just happen to sell a lot of, what is respectfully referred to as, Jesus junk. Lately it has really started to bother me that people like it so much. Particulary the little crosses that we sell that have cutesy little sayings on them like "God bless your cat" or even "Good luck." People buy them all the time and they will look at me and say something like "Oh I love these, they're so cute." Cute! The cross is cute to you!?!? We have so watered down our message of the cross that it has become a cute ornament and no longer a picture of the suffering that we should have endured. We have given up the picture of savagery and torture that our Lord Jesus took upon himself and have traded it for something "cute". It makes me wanna puke! |

Me too! I worked at a very widely known women's conference a few years ago (we did it as a group to raise money for our church) I personally swiped at least $100,000 worth of plastic through the register over two days. T-shirts, bookmarks, books, tapes, key chains, bumper stickers, even book bags and purses. This was not a free conference either--tickets were $75.00 each. These women were whipping out credit cards left and right to charge hundreds of dollars for mementos to take back. They were willing pay interest on a credit card to make sure they got a TShirt and keychain from the event! What does the Word of God say about entering into debt???
Christianity is big, big business, a 'gazillion dollar' business and personally our whole group was ready to 'puke' by the time it was over. We did make $50.00 for each person that worked ($250.00 for the church kitty--and that doesn't even cover the cost of curriculim for children's church these days)
Yes indeed, it's an eye opener. Jesus is marketed everyday. His holy sacrifice is used to generate more money that I can even imagine--it is a stomache churner, for real! |

| Oh man, HOME RUN!! Your thoughts (THANKS for sharing them) are so convicting!! Yes, it is very disappointing when the cross on which our Lord died for OUR sins is reduced to "cute". I will remember this for a long time. ~mike |

| I totally agree with the junk thing. But, I would rather see crosses out there then some of the other "trinkets" I see people buy. I used to work for Hallmark and some of the junk I would see people buy was just plain weird!!!!! |

| Good point. Besides - everybody knows cats are going to hell! |

Unfortunately, this is an example of commecialization of the sacred. We see that everywhere and the church is no exception. We are starting to look more and more like the world everyday. I went into a major Christian store the other day to buy a doll for my grand daughter and I was nearly floored when they told me the cost ($99). Really! I expected to pay about $40 but that price was insane. I am with you (Zach and Jessica). I find the whole thing repulsive. |

| My cat is going to heaven. And my previous cat ( Scooby ) who lived to be 22 is there already. Did I mention that my cat saved my life once. Cats are amazing creatures! |

| No cats were harmed during the writing of this blog |

| Hi Zack & Jess, that sort of 'junk' happens allover the world! Here in South Africa, it is a big business. Ppl selling all sorts of paraphanalia & calling it 'gospel'. Thank God for ppl in the Body that can recognize this sort of nonsense. I believe that you are in a position to encourage ppl to know the right from wrong. May you guyz be blessed. Ps Gary R. Thomas. |

| Its really sad to me to hear that this is a global problem and not just contained between our shores. Thanks for sharing what you have witnessed Gary. Hopefully people all over the world will begin to take a stand against this sort of commercialization of the gospel. I really believe that this generation will see a huge change in the way we view church and how we interact with our societies. Hopefully we will get back to what it means to be a disciple. |

I can't help but think that as people mature in the Lord and come to value their relationship with Him above all else this will change. At least that's what happened to me. Some years ago I took up crocheting. One of the small projects attainable for me was that of a cross. I guess it was to be a bookmark. Anyway, I started out on it. Somewhere along the way a neighbord said to me, "Why don't you make me one of those in pink?" Suddenly I was saddened by the whole project and I put it away. Something deep in me said, "the cross is too precious to trvialize in this way." My neighbor never got that crocheted pink cross bookmark she wanted. At least, she didn't get it from me. So I don't like the commercialization either. However, we can't change hearts, only God can. However, we can pray, share and set an example. At least that's how I see it :) |
