Jesse, this attempt negates itself.  It essentially asks if God is powerful enough to create something that He can't do.  Ridiculous question, because He can do anything.  The answer is no, because He is all-powerful.

God is all powerful, but there are things that God "will not" do.  It is not because He is unable to, that He is limited in power in any way. It is because of who He is in nature.

- God can't lie.  Heb.6:18a So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.
- God can't get tired. Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.
- God can't take on a job he can't handle. Ah, Lord God! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you. —Jeremiah 32:17
- God can't be unholy. And one cried to another and said: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!" —Isaiah 6:3
- God can't be prejudiced. In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears him and works righteousness is accepted by him. —Acts 10:34-35
- God can't break a promise. My covenant I will not break, nor alter the word that has gone out of my lips. —Psalm 89:34
God can't act contrary to his nature that is permanent.  James 1:17  Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.[a] He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.
- God can't remember sins he's chosen to forget. I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins. —Isaiah 43:25
- God can't make a loser. Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ. —2 Corinthians 2:14
- God can't abandon you. Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, he is the one who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you. —Deuteronomy 31:6
- God can't stop thinking about you. How precious also are your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; when I awake, I am still with you. —Psalm 139:17-18
- God can't stop loving you. Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you. —Jeremiah 31:3

So, yes...  God is all powerful!

Great blog Jesse.

This riddle is an interesting “paradox”. On the surface it seems that riddle destroys God’s omnipotence. This riddle is a play on words and I no way disproves Gods omnipotence. This is question is known as a pseudo-question. It’s like asking, “Can God win an arm wrestling match against Himself?” or, “If God beat Himself up, who would win?” or, “Can God’s power defeat His own power?”

The question is nonsense because it treats God as if He were two instead of one. The phrase “stronger than” can only be used when two subjects are in view, for example, Bill is stronger than Bob, my left arm is stronger than my right arm, etc. Since God is only one, and since He has no parts, it makes no sense to ask if He is stronger than Himself. That’s why this is a pseudo-question. It proves nothing about any deficiency in God because the question itself is incoherent.

This pits one aspect of God’s ability against another--in this case, His creative ability against His ability to lift. The goal is to show that there are some things God can’t do, thus undermining the Christian concept of an omnipotent Creator. This illustration, however, miscasts the biblical notion of omnipotence, and is therefore guilty of the straw man fallacy.

Omnipotence doesn’t mean that God can do anything. The concept of omnipotence has to do with power, not ability per se. In fact, there are many things God can’t do. He can’t make square circles. He can’t create a morally free creature who couldn’t choose evil. He can’t instantly create a sixty-year-old man (not one that looks sixty, but one that is sixty). None of these, though, have to do with power. Instead, they are logically contradictory, and therefore contrary to God’s rational nature. The “Can God make a rock so big He can’t lift it?” challenge is no threat to Christian theism at all!

God can't do anything against His nature. For example, God is perfectly righteous, so He cannot sin. Sin is completely contrary to who He is. Or another. God is love, therefore He cannot tempt anyone to sin. ~mike

Because God can't stop being God does that mean He can't be God?

Actually this question is easier than the aetheist's perspective of where did something come from if not nothing?

Great blog. Yes God is all powerful! (Lourdes did a wonderful job of explaining that with scriptures.)

Norm, haha, don't you love when they ask a question like that while going on about how much more logical they are being then Christians?

Well put, Norm!!!! The asker of the original question (your instructor) reveals his own ignorance! I love that!  ~mike

Hey Jess - Good blog.  I'm glad you had the opportunity to even talk about God at all during the conversation.  Believe it or not Jeremy and I were just talking about this same question last week. It must be the question of the week.   Everyone here gave you great solid answers and I think you probably already know that God is all powerful and can't go against his nature but this is one of those tricky questions you can get stuck on. I had to think about it when Jeremy first asked me too.  But now you have some great answers to take back to the conversation.

Remember though there are no meaningless conversations when you are talking about God.
Sometimes people ask you these questions and they are not serious about wanting answers, they are just trying to trip you up and make you look bad - but more importantly....sometimes there are those who use these questions as "feelers" or "barriers".  They may be seeking answers about God and don't really know how to get into a conversation or feel uncomfortable asking the real questions they want to know so they "feel" you out with conversations such as these.  They may be using the questions as "barriers" - because God may already be working in their hearts, He may be calling them and they may be running scared (as I did) and so they will throw out all kinds of questions to dodge the real issue of answering the call.

So if they want to continue the conversation and really want an answer to the "riddle" go back with your answers gently and respectfully but also try and go back with a few questions for them - such as "do you know for sure"....why should He let you into his heaven" (remember those? the ones you have learned!) - get the conversation on the real track.  They may have more questions like the one you heard ...which is okay - because at least they are open to conversation or they may want to take the opportunity to go deeper - you never know.  Just be alert and open to whatever opportunity God gives you to use and plant seeds in the conversation.
Luv u!

Excellent perspective, Melxjoe!  Our focus should always be on the person!
