| A Weekly Worship Service is Like Cereal |
|
| |
"It's time to admit that our current model of church--go to a building every Sunday, sing songs, listen to speech, practice rituals, write a check, smile, shake hands, and leave--does not meet men's deepest needs.
A weekly worship service is like cereal: it's part of a nutritious spiritual breakfast. But men shall not live by cereal alone. Men need something more than Sunday morning worship if they are to be truly nourished." from Why Men Hate Going to Church I am finishing up this book, just a couple chapters to go. The above quote is a sample of one of the major themes in this book. Churches have to change the way they minister to men if they hope to reach men. David Murrow gives some pretty good arguments for his position. I hope the guys at our church will read this book, especially the Sunday morning men's class. It could really help us direct our men's group in the right way.
Spent my day off in Beckly WVA found a new Starbucks thanks to Chris. Also ate at a new restaurant, had a crab cake sandwhich (great) and grilled poundcake dessert (wow). Boy Beckly is booming. Heading to Lynchburg today for Jerry Falwell's funeral. They are expecting 20,000 people. Nathan Miller is going with me. Nathan and I both graduated from Liberty and we feel the need to show respect to the man who opened Christian education to us. The doors open at 11:00 and the funeral is at 1:00. In case you are interested the funeral will be broadcast live on channel 10 and 13 on the television or you can listen to LU's radio station at 88.3 FM.
Please pray for our building team meeting on May 31, this could be one of the most important meetings in the history of our church. Chuck Cremeans did a great job Sunday night and Christ brought a good message Sunday on the church. Chris and I taught the 201 class Sunday afternoon with five people attending. We were over 300 again and the parking lot was close to full again. Pray for the leadership of our church we need God's direction. Got to go get ready for the funeral, have a great day. |

| Glad you got to get some starbucks-LUCKY!!! Beckley has grown a lot since I grew up there. It's neat to go back every now and then. i see from the description of your food that you ate at the Rim Fire Grille. We ate there too. Not bad. Praying toward the May 31st meeting. I pray that we get a hold of God's vision and plan and just go 100% with it. Have a great day. |

This title attracts me and the review. I have to say that one thing that irks me is the feminization of the church and particularly sermons of the last few years. We've been told forever now that we are to dislike Fire and Brimstone sermons (I haven't heard one in 30 years) and yet the fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom. Sermons that touch me as a man are those that call for war, that describe Christ as Lion, as the warrior-King. Words like Dominion, Triumphy, Victory, War, etc. attract me. The constant psychologicalizing and emasculation in the church is very unattractive to males. I haven't read the book but could maybe see wheere it is heading. A great book that I read in the past is Vanishing Manhood in America by Weldon Hardenbrook. |

They need to write a book on "Why women hate church too!!!!" I am with the men on this one! There is a fire inside me that goes to sleep on Sundays!!! Yuck!!! Can't do it anymore. My husband feels the same way.... He say church is predictable...same songs, same people speaking, same form,... yuck.. boring... think I'll go to sleep or maybe stay home!!
The exciting thing is God is changing stuff and I know it and I am looking for it!!! I am becoming the church.... I am a church without walls. God lives inside of me and I carry Him where ever I go! I have church on the phone, computer, at the mall, in the bookstore... No more religion .... I am learning to bring the Kingdom where ever with whomever!!!! Fun,,,, never the same,,, always exciting, never boring, challenging, surprising, and it keeps my fire burning!!! |

| Thanks for the comments. I think we need to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water. The local church is a very biblical concept and I believe every believer should be a part of a local church. |

| Much agreed Billy. Yode, we or rather you are certainly NOT the church. I sure hope you were jesting. As to excitement who says the purpose of the church is change and excitement. THAT is part of the problem IMHO. Ritual was/is certainly a part of church or always has been as it was in the Jewish Synagogue and the Tabernacle and Temple. Church calendars, ritual, or Temple ones became the center of the culture and the clock by which civilizations worked and should work. We run into problems when we do NOT center around Christendom and her calendar, again, IMNSHO. Yode, again, the idea that You are the church is error at best. |

| I'm going to agree with Yode AND Billy a bit here. While I don't think you have to go to some "special building" to continue to grow your relationship with God, I DO believe you can't "go it alone". Early believers met at each others' homes to worship God and fellowship together to keep each other strong in the faith. Inevitably, your faith will be challenged and fail at some point and if you have no one "real" to rely on when it does, you risk completely falling away from God. I'm not going to try and sell you on WHERE to go or even what TYPE of church, but I do suggest you find somewhere you feel pretty comfortable, where the doctrine matches up with the Bible and begin to attend regularly. Also, don't forget to extend your new home church the freedom to mess up every now and then...we're all still BECOMING like Christ after all and I guarantee at some point church members will fail you or you'll disagree with your church's position on some faith matter. It is NOT necessary to agree with your church/pastor on EVERY little position. Make sure the biggie's line up though. |

| Church is a place of grace not perfection. Thanks for the thoughts. |
