1) We have read in the Bible that God is faithful, and we believe it, but I think many times we don’t really understand it as fully as we need to. When you study the scriptures that speak about the faithfulness of God, you can really gain a much better understanding and appreciation for it. It is interesting that many times in scripture, both the love of God and the faithfulness of God are spoken of at the same time. They are often combined in the same verse. There seems to be a connection. We know and believe in God’s love for us and we cherish it. In the same way, we can fully trust in His faithfulness. God is always faithful.
2) What does it mean when someone calls you “faithful” ? You can be trusted (God can be trusted). You can be depended upon (God can be depended upon). You can be relied upon (God can be relied upon). People can believe what you say (You can believe what God says). People can have confidence in your abilities (You can have confidence in God’s abilities).
3) The REALITY of God’s Faithfulness (What is it like? How can you describe it?)
It is true. Scripture declares it, so it must be true … 1 Corinthians 1:9 NIV “God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.”
It is unlimited. There is no limit to it. There is always more available than you need. Psalm 36:5 NIV “Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies (heavens also in Hebrew).” Psalm 103:11 “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him.” How high is that? Scientists with the most powerful telescopes have never found an end to the universe. It is unending.
It will never stop. It will never end. It is permanent and forever. Psalm 119:90 NIV “Your faithfulness continues through all generations.” It was there before creation and continues forever.
It surrounds God. It is with Him wherever He goes and is in whatever He does. Psalm 89:8 NIV “O Lord God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O Lord, and your faithfulness surrounds you.”
It is part of God’s nature, the very essence of His being. It is not possible for Him to be anything but faithful. 2 Timothy 2:13 NIV “If we are faithless, He will remain faithful, for He cannot disown Himself.”
4) The RESULT of God’s Faithfulness (What happens because of His faithfulness?)
He never breaks a covenant. He always keeps His side of every covenant (agreement). Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands.”
He never breaks a promise. He always does what He promises to do. 1 Kings 8:56 NIV “Praise be to the Lord, who has given rest to His people Israel just as He promised. Not one word has failed of all the good promises He gave through His servant Moses.”
He will do it. You don’t have to do it because He will do it. You only need to wait for Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:24 NIV “The One who calls you is faithful and He will do it.”
He will strengthen you and He will protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3 NIV “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”
5) The RESPONSE to God’s Faithfulness (What is our response? What should we do?)
Be greatly encouraged. Hebrews 6:18 NIV “God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.”
Consider Him faithful (believe it!). Hebrews 11:11 NIV “By faith Abraham, even though he was past age–and Sarah herself was barren–was enabled to become a father because he considered Him faithful who had made the promise.”
Wait on Him. Lamentations 3:22-24 NIV “Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, ‘The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.’”
Hold on to hope. Hebrews 10:23 NIV “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”
Commit your ways to Him and do good. 1 Peter 4:19 NIV “So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.” Confess it.
Tell everyone about God’s faithfulness. Psalm 89:1 “I will sing of the Lord's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.” |
