If you look in the image above and follow the line all the way to the end and see that tiny little black speck, that's me. I attended Jerry Falwell's funeral yesterday and I have never been to anything quite like it.
- They were expecting 20,000, I think there were more
- Security was everywhere
- Traffice was routed from every major route into the city
- There were protesters
- There were anti-protester protesters
- The line stretched for almost a mile
- Black Suvs with Washington license plates with police escorts zoomed by
- WSET announced it was the largest event in the history of Lynchburg
- The guys from the funeral home looked very, very nervous
And this was all before you got into the funeral.
It was what happened inside that so touched me. It was the most amazing funeral I have ever attended. It was a celebration of life and the far reaching impact of Dr. Jerry Falwell. - 3.5 million people have been saved through the ministries he started
- 125,000 alumni from the Liberty schools
- A home for unwed moms, a home for alcoholics, a grade school, college, seminary and law school, worldwide television and the list goes on and on.
How could one man make such a difference? The most touching moment was when his daughter stood up and told us what her dad meant to her.
Jerry Falwell's race is run and he is now enjoying the fruits of his labor. The question is will we pick up where he left off telling the world about Jesus Christ? A little side story illustrates the huge impact of Dr. Falwell. While I was standing in line I saw a small black car trying to get out of all the mess. Then I realized it was one of the young ladies who grew up in our church. It was Lisa Knott (Hancock), she rolled down the window and told me she was there for a week of classes. She is a dedicated Christian who is preparing herself for a ministry in Christian counseling. The impact of Dr. Falwell just goes on and on and on.
Falwellisms: You don't determine a man's greatest by what he does; but by what it takes to discourage him. Never, never quit Use every available means to reach every available person. If it's Christian, it ought to be better. "When you can't trace His hand, trust His heart."--Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Pray for the new leaders at Liberty they have a very tough act to follow. Well I have to go, woke up this morning and did something I haven't done in years. I turned on Sesame Street, our grandson, Evan, is visiting with us. :) |
