| When I Don't Feel Like It |
|
| |
Am I the only Christian who sometimes just doesn’t feel like reading my Bible? Sometimes it’s because I’m tired, sometimes I have a busy day and sometimes it is just because. Anyone else? Yet, we are charged in scripture to meditate on His precepts day and night. His Words need to continuously be on our lips. That tells me it is expected for us to open our Bibles at least once per day, if not more often. So, how do we do it when we don’t feel like it? We just make the decision to do it. Whether we think we want to or not, we need to stop right in the middle of the busyness of our day to hear from the One who made this day possible. I have found that opening my Bible to the Psalms gets me going every time. Just read this:
I'm telling the world your wonders; I'll keep at it until I'm old and gray. God, don't walk off and leave me until I get out the news Of your strong right arm to this world, news of your power to the world yet to come, Your famous and righteous ways, O God. God, you've done it all! Who is quite like you? You, who made me stare trouble in the face, Turn me around; Now let me look life in the face. I've been to the bottom; Bring me up, streaming with honors; turn to me, be tender to me, When I open up in song to you, I let out lungsful of praise, my rescued life a song. All day long I'm chanting about you and your righteous ways,
That makes me hungry for more!
When you don't feel like it, do it anyway. Worship, study and praise takes sacrifice, but it always brings a blessing! |

| I know exactly what you mean. The night before last I did not feel like praying much less reading my Bible. I had a splitting headache on top of it. But I forced myself to do it anyway. When I started praying my headache started to fade!!!!! When I got done reading my Bible it was nearly gone!!!!! So it goes to show that God rewards you for doing it even if you don't feel like it. :) |

| I have found if I don't find time to read my bible, and I try to sleep, I don't have a very good night of sleep. So, I make sure I read it every day, whether I feel like it or not. Usually when we don't feel like it are the times when we most need it! That goes for prayer either. Sometimes we become discouraged and don't want to pray, but those are the times we need to do it anyway. Read the bible and pray, and when you don't feel like it, do it anyway! |

Hi Soozie, Recently I was reading the Screwtape Letters to my daughter when I came across a great quote relating to your struggle (which at some time or another is a struggle we all endure), here it is in abbreviated form-- "It is during such trough periods, much more than during the peak periods, that it is growing into the sort of creature He wants it to be. Hence the prayers offered in the state of dryness are those which please Him the best.” Please feel free to read the whole thing here. Bottom line though, you're exactly right, it comes down to a choice we must make! ~mike |

Thanks, Mike. I remember reading that, but I couldn't remember where I read it. C.S. Lewis was a wise man! I need to reread that book - it's awesome, plus I read they are going to make a movie out of it soon.
Deb and TS, thanks for standing alongside me in this confession. I was thinking about a song I heard Larnelle Harris sing years ago. There's a line that goes, "When praise demands a sacrifice, I'll worship even then." I won't equate praising in spite of my "'Idontwannas" in any way to risking my life to honor God. Yet, such praise does demand my willingness to "die to myself" or, to put it in more contemporary terms, place God's desires for me above my desires for myself. I think C.S. Lewis hit the nail on the head when he pointed out that such times, God is maturing us. It is humbling to be actively worshipping because we are called to, not only because we want to in the moment. It is how we acknowledge God's authority over us and, in turn, that attitude of humility blesses us. The last shall be first, the first shall be last....Do we worship a God who does things all upside down to the way the world works or what?! Cool!! |

Soozanne, First thanks for having the strength to start this BLOG. This is a fight I often loose and find some reason not to read scripture or pray. Hopefully in the future I will remember the Psalm you referenced and set aside the quite time for study and prayer. Randy |

Randy,
If anything I wrote helps you in your walk, praise God! We're in this together! |

| As others have said here, I have found that when I don't "feel" like reading is when I need it the most... |

| This seem to be a common problem among Christian. I agree with voice. It is when we need it the most. Mike |
