Yes, the religion of self.  I remember preaching against those silly girls t-shirts that read "it's all about me".  Just proves that even though we've been exiled from the Garden we haven't strayed far from the tree.

This religion has become so common that it's actually accepted by most so called Christians. The Bible tells us we need to DIE to OURSELVES! If were not daily dieing then we have created our own god and religion which would be the religion of self!! Great post.

I see the word "religion" as a neutral word, i.e. there is good religion and bad. Folks who say "religion" itself is a bad thing make me a little nervous. But this religion of self, interesting concept! Yes, I suppose we could easily be in bondage to ourselves, addicted to serving our self-interests. Yeah, I could believe that. Interesting article, Gary. Thanks for the post!

Vincent: exiled, but soon to be re-united with the Gardener

Angela: true, we need to remember that every day, to die to ourselves, it is a daily fight!!!! and yes, it has become a predominate part of the modern church, to worship self, what is good for self, to attain the wealth and comfort that self demands!

Mike n Laura: true, religion in itself is not bad, but when that religion had taken the place of a true personal walk with Christ, then that religion has become the religion, and there-by taking the place of Christ.

I was just reading this blog and I thought you might be intrested, it's a good example of what religion of self looks like in the modern christian church, or individual believer

So sad, when encountering those that have become stagnant in their faith, because those that don't grow become dormant, and will then be un-fruitful. Paul wrote about un-fruitful branches being cut off and Christ spoke of this also.  I don't even waste my time debating with these. These will always twist the Word to fit their beliefs, omitting scripture that does not fit.

It is amazing what we see when we look into the Father's mirror (the Bible), we often see a monster we did not know exists peering back at us, hidden behind the facade and false personas that we have developed through religion to help hide the true us. It is awesome when we can fall on Christ, and have Him break down these walls and callouses that have developed.

James 1:21-27  Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

Joey, it is awesome when the Lord makes a little spit in the dirt, and rubs the mud into our eyes, what we see!

John 9:1-6  And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

The Holy Ghost is so awesome, I had to post my reply, it hit me so hard,

It made me consider what I have missed because my own eyes were closed. Blinded often by my own arrogance and self knowledge.

Because according to ME, I know so much about the Lord,

According to ME, I am so much better than everyone else.

According to ME, all the posts I have read are for everyone else!

So I needed a little mud rubbed into my eyes, so I could go back and re-apply the other posts to my own walk, to see how many gems I had walked past.

Mike n Laura, I love it when you visit, it is like when my favorite Aunt or Uncle came by, you are always a welcome family member. You are like the smell of rain on a warm spring day, always refreshing. Thank you for your obedience to Father!
