I am feeling frustrated and discouraged because I just got off the phone with the people helping me with the vacation trip, and apparently the idea of a train trip cross country to the Grand Canyon sounds a lot better on paper than in reality. I had the pleasure of speaking with Pauline Frommers, daughter to Arthur who started the Frommers vacation books 51 years ago or so. She said because Amtrak has been starved of money for years, it is often dirty, late and not the ideal travel situation with young children. Freight trains and US travel trains share the same rails and freight cars get the right of way, meaning Amtrak just sits off to the side for whenever a freight train has to go through. Her father had an 18 hour late situation once when he had to travel via train due to an ear problem. They are typically 4 to 6 hours late.
I am so bummed, and not at all sure how my kids will handle this information. (Yes, I recognize this is really not a momentous problem in the scheme of things, and a free vacation problem may be one you want to deal with, but have some empathy for a tired mommy,' kay?) The other part of this being that our current two would be 4 & 6 next year and not quite old enough to go down into the Grand Canyon (below the rim) and there are even sheer drops which could be very dangerous. We know Elijah & Joyanna well enough to trust they'd stay away from the edge, but the unknown adoption situation could make that hairy if we had two not quite used to obeying.
Pauline suggested considering Yellowstone NP instead of GC because it has more kid friendly activities and cool things to see like wildlife and the volcanic plain. It is also more temperate and probably safer in terms of drop offs. Kevin & I haven't been to Yellowstone, either, so he'd no doubt find that idea livable- but what about 5 year old Elijah, who has campaigned for this train trip cross country and bought into the whole idea full boar? I'd appreciate your prayers for all of us to do what's best and I'd really like your own input as to experiences you've had and insight you may get for us, thank you.
I'm in the midst of so much right now, I've not been online here much, but am thankful for the family backing I find here at Mychurch. Blessings, all!
