Solomon was indeed wise! Its amazing how most of us (including me) can't seem to follow his advise when it comes to spouting off our big fat traps. If physical flogging was an actual possibility for us, I think we might think a little more about the hurtful things we say about each other. Many of us hold our children accountable for their words but don't hold the same standard to ourselves. Some times we say things we don't even believe to be offensive, we are "just joking". I was caught in this trap just about a week ago. I was carelessly ribbing a fellow employee and she seemed to take it as a joke. I didn't know her personal circumstances that well and didn't know until another co-worker called my attention to her sensitivity to my comment, that I had upset her. I had to do the right thing, of course, and apologize profusely. I don't know how she took this but the point is made that you can never know how your sharp tongue can affect others, especially in a pubic, work or social situation. It was a great lesson for me and a good way to initiate my bible studies towards the evil of the tongue. I've found tons of passages that refer to this and now I will certainly be more careful.
18:6 A fool's lips bring strife, and his mouth invites a flogging. |
