Meekness-timidty?

10:1 Now I Paul myself entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, I who in your presence am lowly among you, but being absent am of good courage toward you:
2:11 Let a woman learn in quietness with all subjection. 2:12 But I permit not a woman to teach, nor to have dominion over a man, but to be in quietness.

One of my best friends informed me that a man she was dating told her he would only marry a "meek" woman. My best friend, Lakeshia is not meek. Needless to say the relationship ended. I have been wrestling with the preceding verses ever since she and I had  the conversation about her ex.  So what does Paul mean when he says he himself is meek or when he says we, as women should be silent and in subjection? Is quiteness the same thing as being meek? You decide.  Please spare me the rhetoric about historical context, I have a MDiv degree, I know the argument.  I would like us all to have a friendly discussion about what you all think (smile)!

The problem with far too many people is that they put stipulation on relationships before they give the person a chance and miss out on great companionship and sometimes love.

The historical context is where we go wrong here. It was a time that women were not to be heard, period. Jesus would often challenge this thinking because he on many occasions talked to women in public.

I think meekness as it pertains to women is her having a quiet but assertive, calm but outgoing, kind and compassionate spirit.

Amen.  I liked how you gave a balanced view of the word from a male perspective. Too many men want to "dominate" women, without considering the blessing of an "assertive, outgoing, kind, calm, and compassionate spouse"

revstarr, I agree.  I was in the dominated/controlled marriage til got set me free.  I don't feel every man is like that, at least not the next one God send for me if it be His Will. (smiles)

Terry-Thank God every man is not a dominating control freak! My husband is a big teddy bear, very supportive and loving.
