God was speaking to Nebuchadnezzer as his heart was lifted up with pride about how great he had become this is what the Lord said to him:  "...Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone He wishes."  Daniel 4:32

After King Nebuchadnezzer came to his senses and was restored to his glorious power He said:  "Now I, exalt and glorify the King of heaven, because everything He does is right and all His ways are just." Daniel 4:37

As the presidential election day draws near for those of us in the United States I would like to remind you of a few things regardless of who wins.  It is easy to get caught up in the moment and in the passion of the ideals and direction of this great country, but as people of God let us back up a moment and gain some perspective. 

1.  First, God is Sovereign. To be sovereign means to be supreme ruler that possesses supreme rank, power, or authority.  God is the King of kings and the Lord of lords.  No one rises to power whether by tyranny, election, or by fraud that God did not ordain.  This is a hard concept for us to grasp since we see God as good and that He is just.  Men are just pawns in the ultimate plan of God.  He gives the kingdoms of this world to anyone He wishes to give it to.  In this case, if He chooses to give it to Barack O'Bama or John McCain then so be it.  Whoever,  is elected it will come as no surprise to God.  Either man will be an instrument of God to accomplish His purposes. Romans 13:1b states emphatically:  "The authorities that exist  have been established by God."  This means the good, the bad, and the ugly have been established by the God.  If the Democrats win then this is the power that God will have established to rule and reign over us. If the Republicans win then this too will be the power that God has established to rule over us.  Now some would say, Why would God appoint the bad guys?  The answer remains with God.  The Bible tells us that His ways are not our ways nor our thought His thoughts. They are much higher and loftier than ours.  If God would appoint a bad government over any people it would be for a higher purpose than peace and prosperity of the people.  It could be that God would be calling His people to look to Him as their protector, their provider, and their leader.  It could be that God may be humbling a people not to be so independent and trust in their economic, military, or political power, but to trust in the LORD alone.  I am not saying that one party is evil and the other good, I am trying to be objective here.  What I am saying that who ever gains power it will be God ordained and our trust, hope, and peace needs to be in the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY and not in a man, party, country, or system.

2.  Everything God does is right and just.  Whether we understand His purposes or not one thing we can count on is the righteous judgment of God.  God's character has been judged over time and yes even in 2008 Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever the LORD GOD never changes.   Even if it seems in-just that one would lose and another seize victory we can rest assured in the fact that "true and just are Your judgments" (Rev 16:7) and that His "judgments" are "unsearchable." (Romans 11:33)  Meaning that we do not understand and can not comprehend the reasons that are work.  Therefore, by faith, we accept what happens knowing that God has made the right decision.

3.  Be at peace my friends.  If you have been walking with God for any amount of time I know that you have heard this verse quoted many times.  "And we know that all things work together for the good to them that love God and to them that are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28
Remember we belong to God, not to the government.  Those that keep their mind fixed on Him He shall keep them in perfect peace (Isa 26:3).  We are not to be worried about anything, but rather pray about everything, casting all of cares upon Him because He cares for us, and the peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard our hearts and minds (Phil 4:7 & I Peter 5:7).  So, please be at peace, and rest in the Lord He has it under control.

4.  Pray for your leaders.  For some of us, this will fall into the category of praying for your enemies and for those who spitefully use us. LOL :) But seriously, I Tim 2:1 says "that we should offer up requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone- for kings and all  those in authority"  As we pray for the will of God to be done on earth as it is in heaven we will see this Proverb come true before our very eyes.  "The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; He directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases" Proverbs 21:1. So whether we get "4 more years of the same failed policies" as the Democrats say or we "Get socialism, and a candidate that is not ready for office" as the Republicans say.  God will ultimately turn their hearts in whatever direction they need to go to accomplish His plan.  I personally find it ironic that both Presidents have a plan to deal with the economic crisis in our country.  I wonder if either has even considered that God has a plan that supercedes their own.  "Why do the nations conspire and the people plot in vain?" Psalm 2:1  The book of James warns us that we should not make plans without considering what God wills (James 4:13-16).  So let us pray for our leaders, pray for ourselves, and pray that His kingdom come and that His will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.

Remember who ever comes out on top this time around, it is all part of God's over all plan. I would not take it as a mandate so to speak as the Lord can remove someone from power as quickly as they arose but we can be at peace that God is in control, that His judgments are right and true, and He turns the king's heart as He wills.  This should bring us much comfort and peace in the days to come.
