Nashville was in the spotlight as we hosted the Presidential debate between Barak Obama and John McCain at Belmont University. Since Nashville is the home of Country Music, I thought I would see if I could find some wisdom for the debaters (and the rest of us) from current Country songs, from The 100 Best Country Songs Ever, and from two books Country Music Says It All and I've Got Tears In My Ears From Lyin' On My Back In My Bed While I Cry Over You. A theme for the Nashville debate: The Future Is Not What It Used To Be. For us all to keep in mind: Ain't Necessarily So recorded by Willie Nelson. For John McCain on his Vice Presidential Choice: She's Everything sung by Brad Paisley and She's A Hottie sung by Toby Keith and Watin' On A Woman by Brad Paisley. Also for McCain: Somewhere Between Ragged And Right recorded by John Anderson and There's Frost On My Roof, But There's Fire In My Furnace. A question to make the other candidate look bad: If Fingerprints Showed Up On Skin, Wonder Whose I'd Find On You? For both candidates: Is This the Best I'm Gonna Feel? recorded by Don Gibson and Help Me Make It Through The Night sung by Kirs Kristofferson and Please Remember Me sung by Tim McGraw and If Only I Could Win Your Love sung by Emmylou Harris. For both candidates after the debate: Things I Should Have Said sung by Clay Walker. For America's middle class: Lord Have Mercy On The Working Man sung by Travis Tritt. For when the candidates dodge questions: I Walk The Line and When You Say Nothing At All and Don't Think I Didn't Think About It. For Barak Obama: Sounds So Good sung by Ashton Shepherd and If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don't Want To Be Right. For Tom Brokaw: This Is Me You're Talking To sung by Trisha Yearwood. For the spin doctors and handlers: Roll With Me sung by Montgomery Gentry and You Changed Everything About Me But My Name. For those of us watching the debates: What Hurts The Most? and Do You Believe Me Now? For when you get upset with something one of the candidates says: Holler Back and/or Let It Go. For an overall evaluation of the debate: Tumbling Tumbleweeds and Nowhere To Go, Nowhere To Be. For the future loser of the election: I Miss You Already And You're Not Even Gone. For those of you reading this: I've Enjoyed As Much Of This As I Can Stand.
