David Murrow in his book Why Men Hate Going to Church uses the illustration of a zoo that received a new bear for its collection. The bear's display area was not ready so he had to be kept in a small cage. After a year of being in that cage he was finally placed in his new display area and after being released he would only walk in a circle pacing back and forth. One of the workers observed he was walking the exact dimensions of the cage. He was illustrating how hard it is for the church to change after years of doing the same thing over and over. Ouch!
I finished this book a few days ago and I would recommend to anyone concerned with reaching men with the gospel of Christ. As a pastor I was convicted with many of the observations Murrow had about the church. I think every pastor should read this and any Christian who has a burden to reach men with the gospel. His web site ChurchForMen has a lot of helpful information. It's out in paperback so there is no reason to hold back, I think it is a worthwhile read.
I can honestly say that for years I felt like that bear, now I only look like him. Growing up in a Liberal denomination that is very structured and by the book (Iknow they sound like contradictions), I can see how many church goers will stay wit the dimensions of the cage they feel comfortable with. I am trying to expand those dimensions and work outside of my "comfort zone". It is a hard thing to do, but I hope that the Lord will use me to His glory.
