| Wonderful Anointed Preaching |

People often describe a particular sermon as "anointed preaching" or that a particular preacher is "really anointed." I often ask people what they mean when they say things like that. The usual answer has been something along the lines of, he really got me stirred up, or he is exciting. Some do genuinely give the Holy Spirit credit for the preaching, but then when I ask how they knew this, I usually get similar answers to enthusiasm and excitement.
How does the Bible describe real anointed preaching? In Isaiah 61 we find words like good news, binding up broken hearts, proclaiming liberty, freeing prisoners, proclaim God's favor, his vengeance and to comfort those who mourn. Now that could be done in a manner that is calm and quiet or loud and enthusiastic. The volume or level of excitement has nothing to do with being an anointed preacher. The content has everything to do with it. That’s the teaching of Scripture. 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 61:2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 61:3 to grant to those who mourn in Zion--to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. |

| I guess the amount of conviction could be part of it too? We all know people who happen to say the right things, but at the wrong time, or in the wrong situation. But God's timing is always right, and some preachers just innately know they are speaking in tune w/the Spirit, and their content as well as their timing is in perfect harmony with the Spirit. I think if I was unsure of myself, my level of conviction, and therefore excitement and enthusiasm, would fall off a bit. But bad content can also be dressed up with a stylized, rehearsed delivery too! Just some thoughts! |

| Tim, I see that you are talking about source of anointing, whereas I was talking about the effect of anointing. But again, how do we discern? Certainly by both the effect, the content of the message and also of course as you said, with the anointing of discernment given us by the Holy Spirit. That is what 1 John 2:20 is about. "The writer is suggesting that...a special gift (or grace) is available and has been received: a chrism (χρῖσμα), or “anointing.” The orthodox are thus able to detect the doctrinal error of the heretics, not only by observing the act of schism itself, but also (“moreover”) by drawing upon their own spiritual insight and sensitivity" [Smalley, S. S. (2002). Vol. 51: Word Biblical Commentary : 1,2,3 John. Word Biblical Commentary (105). Dallas: Word, Incorporated.] |
