| (Hang with me on this, I plan to tie it together eventually) Those of you who know me well, know that I am a history geek. My parents took me to historical site after historical site, until the concept of how we got here as a nation was firmly embedded in my mind. No matter how you voted yesterday or what your politics may be, this election broke all kinds of historical boundries. Who would of ever thought (going alphabetically so I don't show favoritism) that a former naval officer, a POW at the infamous Hanoi Hilton, would rise above all of that and run for president of our country. Who would of ever thought that an Alaskan female governor would make history and be his choice for vice president, bridging the gender gap. On the other side of the coin, who would have ever thought that a Kenyan-American would be president and who has a wife, that came from the projects of Chicago, had the drive to go to college and become a lawyer and now, is the first lady elect. His running mate overcame a life changing event when he lost his wife and child in a car accident. Anyway, where this is all going is.....as I watched the events unfold last night, I started to think about the events that brought us as a country to this point. Us older people had no idea 40 years ago this would ever have been possible. We all know of the Lincoln presidency and the challenges he faced with a nation divided over slavery. When I was a kid, I remember seeing the stuggle of the that race in the streets of Birmingham, marches in the streets of Selma and the burning crosses of the KKK. Such names in history as Harriet Tubbman, Shirley Chisom, Jackie Robinson, Stephen Douglas, Rosa Parks, The Buffalo Soldiers and Martin Luther King Jr come to mind. Even one of my heroes, Gen.Colin Powell (ret), was not allowed to order food at a drive thru. He had to knock on the back door, and if the workers were in a generous mood, he would get some food (can be found in his autobiography) We as a nation should put aside our political differences and pray for our leaders and our new president, and ask God to guide them and bless our country. A song from the 60's says....UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL, AND IF OUR BACKS SHOULD EVER BE AGAINST THE WALL...... The conditions that he is inheriting was described this morning on the news as "an inbox from hell" Hope all of this doesn't offend anyone, as I try to avoid talking politics, if at all possible. I would sincerly hope that we as Christians would be grown up enough to embrace the results and pray, not only for our nation, but for each other, as we move forward. I'm getting of my soapbox now. hahahahahaha Oh, the title "the arc of history"...was in Obama's first speech as president elect. |
