Shelley: We, sometimes, think as christians that life should be easy.....after all, we're God's children. But that's not how it is.......can't have roses without thorns :) But, we can submit, quit whining, and watch what God does with us!

Hi Cindy!

I too have worn those dark glasses, many many times.

Once thing I'd like to add to your post if you don't mind. Romans 8:28 from the KJV says:
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

I think it's important to note here that this verse begins with the word "and". The word "and"is a conjunction meaning that it is linked to the previous verses.

Let's look at those verses:

Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for uswith groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to [the will of] God.

What these verses say is that the Spirit comes along beside and helps us. He joins joins along with us. When we pray he will intercede for us as long as we are seeking the Lords will. He doesn't do all the work for us and "all things don't work together for the good" unless we are also praying. It's a joint effort.

So if we are praying and seeking the Lord, and we are allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf, and we love God  and we are called according to His purpose, then  all things work together for the good.

I think too many people use Romans 8:28 as an escape mechanism. It frees them from any responsibility whatsoever. The truth is not all things do work together for the good. We have to play a part in that promise as well. A huge part.

Anyway, great post. This is the way I have come to understand this passage and I believe it's important that we realize that God's will doesn't automatically come to pass.

In love,
Michael

michael; thanks for stopping by.....and thanks for adding that! It's true.......I've seen alot of people thinking they have NO responsibility in it......but we do.........
There are situations that we may not see it come to pass.....it doesn't happen immediate......Ken and my testimony on our marriage is proof of that.
Again, thanks! God Bless you

This scripture is so very rich and many-faceted.

First, we need to remember that it speaks to all God's people, not just to the individual, so when it seems that the "good" is taking a long time to arrive remember that He is making it work out for the rest of His people, too.

Second, I must remember that sometimes when I seem to be stuck in a bad place, and my prayers for deliverance seem to be unanswered, maybe it's because God is holding me there and waiting for a change to take place in my heart before allowing me to move on.

Third, and perhaps most important, He wants us to remember that His will for us is always for good. Bad things are not God's will — they are circumstances from Satan that God must and will overcome in order to bring about His ultimate will, which is good for His children.

I must stop here, Cindy Lou, before you accuse me of using your space for my blog. :-)

That's good Cindy......we are so selfish and think that God owes us health, peace and prosperity but He doesn't owe us anything as He has already given us everything.

For some reason I have been drawn to reading certain verses from the Message today. Here are Romans 8:26-28 from that Paraphrase:

"Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God's Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don't know how or what to pray, it doesn't matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves, knows our pregnant condition, and keeps us present before God. That's why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good."

Michael: awesome! One of my favorite sayings is that when it hurts too bad to speak, God hears our heart's cry.
He knows the outcome of the situation before it ever happens, He speaks for us, and works all things into something good!
This verse speaks a jillion words to me........of His love, of His mercy, and of His purpose!

November 06, 2008

A jillion? Wow! That sounds like a whole bunch to me.

There are a "jillion" reasons why I don't deserve His love. Thank God I have a savior!

Cindy, I love that verse, Romans 8:28.  He does work thing for the good of those that love Him.  We may not see it as our paths are crooked but His is always straight and His wisdom perfect.  We do get hooked up in the me syndrome and forget that we are here for His purpose and not our own.  How often has that been the case with me? :-)

I just thought of something else about this scripture's personal meaning for me.

I grew up in a preacher's household, but with very little instruction in how to live a godly life. This verse was quoted by Sunday School teachers, preachers (including my dad), and Bible study leaders. but because I was not hearing a call to the ministry (forbidden anyway in the Baptist church of that day) or to the mission field, it did not apply to me — I was not one of those "who are called according to His purpose." For many years I wondered why God would withhold such a promise from me, and it was only after I came to my current church that I learned that being called to ministry is but one of millions or even billions of calls to God's purpose. I finally am able to lay claim to the wonder promise He has for all His children — GOOD.

Lee: amen and thanks for sharing this! So many times we are pushed to be "called"....the calling is what others think we should be.......but the truth is our calling comes from God. And there are soooooooooooo many callings, like you said!
