Going slightly off-center.  I was recently asked to speak at a dear friend's funeral.  My eulogy included some classic epitaphs I have collected over the years...and one I would write for Gerry.  These are my cryptic notes from my speech, but hopefully they will tickle some.  pa

The children of Israel wanted bread

And the Lord sent them manna,

I wanted a wife,

And the Devil sent me Anna.

Or how about…

Here lies my spouse of 55 years…3 of which were good - a good Catholic

They say of boats that the 2 happiest days are the day you get it and the day you get rid of it - my husband was a lot like a boat

For those who know my sense of humor, you will understand why I liked this one:

Here lies Ezekiel - Age 102 - They say the Good Die Young

I imagine this one was written by someone with a somewhat twisted sense of humor:

Here lie the remains of Harry

Looked up the elevator shaft to see if

the car was on the way down. It was.

Some were forward-looking:

Here lies an Atheist

All dressed up

And no place to go.

And a few, in quotes, appear to be the final words of the deceased, as in this case of 6 simple words:

"I told you I was sick!"

And one Final one - from my feisty next-door neighbor in Md., Maggie was diagnosed with cancer just after her 81st birthday - struck down, as she said on her deathbed, in the prime of her life - I thought she rather profoundly summed her own life, and to a large extent, all of ours. Her headstone reads:

Maggie

Born January 1906, Died April 1987
Neither of which were my choice

Humor aside, her ability to balance the best and worst of life, to embrace both with equal passion and resolve, and to do it all with an unwavering faith is what made her so special in my eyes.

It is the life well-lived that inspired us, taught us, touched us, and will continue to challenge us in the years ahead, as we strive to attain our potential.

So, at the end of the day, if I were to imagine a young man viewing a headstone for Gerry, what would I imagine it saying? I think it would simply read as follows…

While no one in life is indispensable, a few will remain always in our hearts as irreplaceable.  Rest in peace, my friend.

Irish,

One more I meant to post earlier and forgot (but was reminded today):

"I can not become the person I want to be by being the person I am." -unk

I had another personal experience today of someone who talked about wanting to be more involved in ministry, wanting to be more involved in the community, wanting to serve more.  So I asked the obvious question, 'what's stopping you?'.  And the response was effectively, 'I am too busy being the person I am'.

I think it was Stephen Covey who wrote, Hope is Not a Strategy.  Talking about changing, wishing we could change, wanting the world to somehow be different...is not enough...we can not get to a better state or a more personal relationship with God...until we accept that growth requires change...it requires active effort, not passive acceptance.

WOW! you have no idea how much that applies to my life right now and how much that really helps!!!

Irish,  No sure what is going on with you now but if those words helped, then you are more than welcome.  They were general comments, not intended specifically for you.

When I first read the quote, I thought it was another 'Yogism'.   But after reflecting on it for some time, I realized just how profoundly simple and deep it is.  Someone once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.  But in life, don't we all do that a lot?  We want things around us to change...while we stay in the comfort of our own patterns and behaviors.

Peace to all and Have a Happy ThanksGiving.

Agreed! the only way to change is to step out of our comfort zone! Insanity in my case is knowing what to do and how to do it but not doing it... It's like in the new testament where it says, in paraphrase, the things I don't want to do I do, and the things I do want to do, I don't do.. or something like that... but that's the way it is for alot of people and we just have to step out and begin the change by doing something different! lol

Also a quote from my beloved and wise Grandmother... she must have told me this a million times and will tell it to me again, lol but she always said that I can never change anyone or anything around me, I can only change myself... and how true that is....

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
