Ever go to a sporting event? Well if you know me at all, you know that I like to spend as much time as I can at the ball park. I'm a huge baseball fan, in fact, I could probably name every player on my team's roster and then some. I love to go out there all decked out in my Royals' gear, ready to see some action, but I'm not typically the guy with his baseball glove, ready catch the first foul ball within 20 yards of his seat. No, I've never been that guy. If fact, I've probably joked about that guy on several occasions. But I went to a game last year and had great seats- right behind home plate, about 15 rows up. About the sixth inning, a foul ball off a right-handed batter went straight up over the backstop. It was probably only in the air for a few seconds, but it seemed like at least a minute. Sure enough, it came down in the aisle right next to me, but I didn't catch it. I missed it out right. I thought to myself, "what if I would have brought my glove?" I would have been ready for it. But what if the ball never gets hit my way, then I just look really stupid, right? Now I'm not so sure what I think. I think maybe that is along the lines of what Christ meant when he instructed us to ready in season and out of season, to be ready whenever the Holy Spirit offers to me an opportunity; an opportunity to do whatever. Am I gonna be the guy with the glove, ready to catch whatever comes at me? Or am I going to be the same guy I was at the ball game: when the ball came my way, I froze and blew it. I'm not saying that I'm always going to have my glove, but I'm sure there are going to be time when I really wish I would have had it. |
