I am wretched...
November 13, 2008
Oh wretched man that I was. Today I am a brand new creation created in righteousness and true holiness. As He is, speaking of Jesus, so am I in this world (1 John 4:17)

Was?  Paul had been saved many years when he wrote that he was the chief of sinners.  Watchman Nee pointed out that the closer a person gets to God the more he becomes aware of his wretchedness.

I think there is a balance here.  I WAS a wretched man, but the sanctifying grace of God cleansed me of my wretchedness.  So, I should not view myself as just a "sinner", but one re-created in the image of God.  I bear the scars of my past sinfullness, but the healing is in process.  I must strive to be more like Him, and less like the world.

On the other hand, I can NEVER FORGET that my cleansing was NOT of my own doing, and that every day I must praise God and thank Him, because the moment he chooses to remove His grace, I would return to that wrechedness.  The praise comes in part from the fact that He won't remove that grace.  Only we can  push it away. Watchman Nee was right; the greater I grow in sanctification, the more shocked and ashamed I am about where I was.  The more I learn, the less I like the old me.  The closer I get to Him, the less I am like the Pharisee and more like the tax collector (Luke 18:10-14)

I am not righteous...only through the blood of Jesus!
November 14, 2008
When Paul wrote that "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing" , he was contrasting life in the Spirit verses life in the flesh. He goes on in Chapter 8 and uses the word Spirit like 28 times as opposed to 2 times, I believe in chapter 7.

For us to say today that we are "wretched" is what the bible calls Carnal Minded.

Keep in mind that carnal simply means "of the five senses" Those thing we can see, hear, smell, touch, and feel. Not all carnality is sin, but all sin is carnal.

In my spirit, the real part of me, that born-again part of me, of which I am commanded to walk, is pure, clean, holy. It has been made perfect and the sealed unto the day of redemption. I am no longer only human. One third of me is wall-to-wall Holy Ghost.

Jesus gave me His righteousness so for me to say that my righteousness is as filthy rags is a great big slap in the face of my Savior.

Again I quote 1 John 4:17. "Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world."

For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and [they] are life.

As man thinketh in his heart, so is he!

Peace and grace to you my friend from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly (spiritual) realm!

May your roots continue to grow down deep into the soil of God's marvelous love!

When Paul called himself the chief of sinners, I believe he meant it.  He had a clear view of his heart and soul in the light of God's glory.

Here's an example:  A man has spent the night lost in the dark on a mountain.  He has fallen many times.  However, he thinks he is in good shape because he cannot see himself.

Suddenly, from a mile away, a rescue party shines a spotlight on him.  From that distance the light is dull, but he can see that his arms are a wee bit dirty.  As the rescue team gets closer and the light shines brighter on him, he sees himself to be more and more dirty.  When the light is 20 feet away and shinning brightly on him he sees himself as he really is -- filthy, scratched and torn, bloody, in wretched condition.

That is the way it is with God and us.  When we are at a distance from God we think we are not very bad.  When were are in the actual Presence of God's glory and holiness, we see ourselves as we really are.  Like Isaiah in chapter 6, I am unclean.

None of this negates the blood.  We can approach God because of the blood of Christ covering us.  However, as long as we are in the flesh, we need his mercy and grace because we are wretched in our human nature.

Amazing Grace doesn't say, " . . . that saved a wretch like I used to be."

I am reflecting now on that love meter and the forgiven scale. A wretch like me- yes you sure don't here much of that term (wretch) any more. Don't think anyone wants to own up to it when there are way to many feel good messages out there. I think differently tho, I'd think by claiming I am wretched and only by Gods grace am i anything else then can i really feel good about myself. With out this word wretch, it's kinda like sweeping dirt under the rug. It just covers it up and disguises it, and never  fixes the problem,. Thanks for this post!~S

This is a great post my brother.

We all must see our need of forgiveness and our unworthiness of anything from the Lord and we must then receive Christ and identify with Him. He is our substitute at Calvary. All that we have is found only in Him. This is a great post.  Blessings,

Paul, after addressing his former status goes on to say that for this reason he has now obtained mercy.

I am here not to argue with you my friend. Again, to be carnally minded, as in of the flesh, or of the five senses, is death. To be spiritually mined is life and peace.  My spirit is as redeemed as it will ever be. My spirit cannot be cleansed any more than it already is. My spirit is the same now as it will be a million years from now. Why can I say that?

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.

God is spirit. (John 4:24) When I get closer to God, he sees not my carnality, he sees my spirit, He sees His Spirit, that spirit that has now been fused together with the same life-giving spirit that raised Christ from the dead. That my friend is why I can come boldly before the throne of Grace!

See, I have made a decision to let God be true and every man a liar. I have put on the new man!

And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

I have been sanctified:

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

When I come to God I don't come with my tail tucked between my legs, whimpering and whining, hoping he won't reprimand me because I am so very wretched, no! I come boldly, like a child of the Most High God, praising Him and thanking Him that He was willing to change, renew, and restore me from the wretched state that I once was, and create in me a clean heart and a renew a right spirit! That same spirit that cries forth, Abba Father!

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

Amen!

Steve,

I wanted to come back and say that brother, I, in no way or means, am trying to condemn you. You write a lot of very intriguing blogs and I do get an opportunity to read some of them.

My point that I am trying to make is that in order for us to be the light and salt of this earth we have to recognize who we are in Christ. In order for the power of God to manifest and flow through us we have to dwell not upon who we are in the carnal realm, yet who we have become in the spirit.

Now you may see things differently and I can respect that, but I don't have to agree with your or we'd both be wrong.

You my friend are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

I love you in Christ my friend. Please take no personal offense to my commentary.

Later!

November 14, 2008

Steve,

I do understand where you are coming from; I also understand where Michael is coming from. I'm have no interest in getting into a debate and I'm pretty sure no one else was either.  I know all the years that I spent in Romans 7...not doing the good that I wanted to do but doing the evil that I didn't want to do; and I know all the years that I thought it was about my commitment or my faith, that I couldn't move from there the freedom spoken to in Romans 8.

I would ask only that you might do me the kindness of considering what Paul said in the first part of Romans 7:

7:4 Likewise, my brethren, you have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God. 7:5 While we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 7:6 But now we are discharged from the law, dead to that which held us captive, so that we serve not under the old written code but in the new life of the Spirit.

Remember also in Romans 8 it says that we are no longer in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of Christ is in us.  The real reason we, as born-again Christians, end up in Romans 7 is because we are still trying to live for the Lord.  I have learned that as soon as I turn to myself to overcome any given temptation then from that point on I am doomed to end up giving in to it...eventually.  That is because I am not abiding in who I am in Christ.  In Him, I am dead indeed to sin and as it says in Romans 6, I must consider myself to be dead to sin and alive to God in Christ...so there is absolutely nothing that "I" have to do about the temptation except to stand in the fact that I do not have to present my members to sin to obey its lusts.  So I set my mind on the truth of the scripture and on the things above and the temptation passes.  The mind set on the flesh is death it is not able to keep the law; the mind set on the spirit is life and peace.

We are a new creation in Christ but we do still have sin that dwells in the members of our bodies.  The scripture says that our bodies are dead because of sin but our spirit is alive because of righteousness.  So, I have learned that I really am a new creation and have become a partaker of the Divine nature (as Peter says) but that sin still dwells in my members.

Satan, the flesh, and sin will always try to get us to move from who we are in Christ to try and get us to do things about the things that God has already told us He has dealt with in Christ.  When we turn from who we really are in Christ to who the flesh says we are then we will fail.

A public blog is not the place to go into all of this but I would encourage you to read "The Rest of The Gospel: When the partial gospel has warn you out" by Dan Stone (see my Profile).  Also Watchman Nee's Book "The Normal Christ Life" is probably the finest exegesis of Romans ever written...these books opened my eyes to all this.

Blessings!
Craig

There are those that are stuck in the O wretched man mode, even after they have suppose to have become new creatures in Christ Jesus. I realize that there's a sinful past, I just wonder was Jesus kidding when he said, Go and sin no more. There are preachers that contribute to people feeling they can continue on in the O wretched man mode.

Thanks for all the discussion.

Isaiah said even our righteousness is filthy rags.  It all boils down to this.  Our only plea before God is the blood of Jesus.  It is easy to begin thinking we are something in and of ourself.  It is all God's mercy and grace.  As believers we are in a relationship with God because of who Jesus is and what Jesus did -- not because of who we are.

I am convinced that our lack of seeing ourselves undone before the living God quenches the flow of His Spirit.  God is looking for brokenness and humility.  Seeing our human nature as God sees it brings us to the point of total dependence on Him.

Amen!  "In Him."  Unfortunately, the flesh still works in me.  However in Him, I indeed am righteous.  Now I need to die to myself and begin to walk daily and practically in His righteousness and not in my flesh!  But, whew, practical, day-to-day holiness is a tough job.  Unfortunately, I am not there yet.  But as Jesus told me to do, I am every day seeking His kindgom and His righteousness.

Steve,

At this point I don't think you're seeing it. I may have sinned today, but the moment that I confessed my sin, and the fact that I didn't have to sin; that I somehow ignored the way of escape that He had provided; and that I am, in Christ because He put me there, and being there I am as dead to sin as He is...at that instant He is faithful and just to forgive me of my sins and to cleans me of all unrighteousness.  I am the righteousness of God at that point...you cannot possibly be more righteous than that!

The remorse is not for my having given my self to sin to obey it's lusts, it is that I chose not to abide in the fact that because He has put me in Christ, I didn't have to give my self to sin to obey it's lusts.  Is there still sin in my body?  Yes...but I am dead to it...that does not mean that it is dead it means that God has taken me (and you) out of the old mankind (Adam) and put us into the new mankind (Christ).  His history is now our history because we are in Him.  His death is now our death and His life is now our life...He lives to God and cannot sin.  I no longer look to my "self", that is my flesh: what I was born with the first time--to live the Christian life; I now put my faith in the fact that Christ himself is living the Christian life through me by the Holy Spirit.

If you read "The Normal Christian Life" then you somehow missed what he was talking about when He told the story about how he went around telling all his friends that he had died and that he was now dead to sin; and about how Romans 7 is not the "normal" Christian life.

Anyway, Steve, you might not be seeing it yet or you just might not be ready to hear it...I don't know, I have no word from the Lord on it.  I cannot be sad for my sins because they have been completely washed away...and I can't be anymore righteous than God is.  So from where I am it would be a sin for me to act like I am not completely free from sin's dominion; it would be a sin for me not to expect Christ's power to be made perfect in my weaknesses.  I do not expect to sin because I am born of God and, as John said, he who is born of God does not sin.  Yet he also said that if we do sin that we can confess or sins and God would forgive and cleans us.  That doesn't mean we're not born of God, it means (like it says in Galatians) that we have rebuilt what we had destroyed...we're not abiding in Christ.  So we repent and abide in Him again.

How God moved us from one person (Adam) to the new creation (Christ) I do not know.  But that is what the born-again experience was...of God are we in Christ.  The reality of all this did not keep me from living in the up and down experience of Romans 7 for more than one decade.  For me it was a slow process of choosing to believe what God said about me rather than what the flesh says about me or what Satan says about me.  The Spirit and the Word always agree.

I'd just encourage you to read The Normal Christian Life again and especially The Rest of the Gospel: when the partial gospel has worn you out.  Dan Stone really has a gift explaining all this.

But, it's still no problem...He is the author and perfecter of your faith...not me.  :-)  He knows how to make it clear to you and it doesn't have to be through me!  [Gracious of me to let Him be Lord huh? LOL!]

Yours in Him,
Craig

One of the things really missing from this discussion is the reminder of the old vs the new testament differences...we need to really give head to scripture its context and where that scripture came from.  In the OLD TESTAMENT we were as filthy rags...but the GOOD NEWS is we are now new creatures in CHRIST that OLD things have passed away and we have become NEW...

How did Christ make us new?...He left us with the gift of the Holy Spirit...the Holy Spirit dwelling in each believer endews us with POWER from on high...and this power is within EACH of us, if we ignore it, if we are ignorance of its benefits we will lose in our Christian walk...Satan is counting on just that...

We have something Old Testament people did not...a Spirit that dwells in each of us...And just for the sake of argument is that Spirit fallible, does it make mistakes, can it walk in sin...NO is the answer...it is perfect as HE is perfect...scripture tells us that, this is why we CAN walk a righteous life this is why we can walk around SET FREE...the CHAINS ARE BROKEN

My life's aim is to get my flesh & my heart which is in both camps I believe to come into alignment with what the truth is in the Spirit...I want to walk around more influenced by my Spirit man than my flesh...yes it is a process but how do you start that if you view yourself to be wretched and not redeemed?...if I am still a wretch what did Christ do on the cross for me?  Does he need to be crucified again over and over for my wretchedness?  Paul says no, and the only way that can be a no answer is if what Christ did on the cross was permanent and intractable...

I am a new creature in Him and in Him I live and breathe and have my being...old things have passed away and all things have become new...

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

If you look up the word "purged" in the dictionary, it means to clean, If you look up the word "clean" it means to purge!

We have been cleaned, purged. White as snow! Praise God! We are to have no more conscience of sins!

I just had to throw that in the pot, for the topic of discussion. Hebrews Rocks!

Great discussion!

Hi Loriinfj (and don't ask me how to pronounce your name if that is your first name or even Lori Infj.  :-))!

I love the many shadows that are in the Old Covenant!  Many are a great opportunity to avoid some of the traps they fell into, Joshua and Caleb and entering the land [rest in Hebrews], etc.  I figure you've probably thought about the fact that there is no sacrifice for the sin of adultery and murder under the law...in fact Hebrews tells us that the Old Covenant sacrifices only covered the unintentional sins of the people.  So David was forgiven because he counted on the mercy of God and his faith was count to him a righteousness too.  Even back then the righteous had to live by faith.  :-)
9:7 but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

RSV has "errors", ESV has "unintentional sins"; the Greek is agnoema: a sin of ignorance.  David had no sacrifice that he could give.

Nice meeting you...absolutely love the way you honored your father in you blog!  Wow, what an awesome relationship!

Best regards,

Hey Craig,

Thanks about my Dads blog...he was an AWESOME man...

Not only that but their sins were not imputed as unrighteousness UNTIL the law was given....that is what the Word says...Once the law came into effect so did so many parameters....the reason why there was no sacrifice for adultery or murder is you simply had to pay with your life, your life was the blood sacrifice for those sins...at least that is the way I see it....so a sacrifice was indeed made....

I LOVE the Old testament because it speaks to relationships so much, it blatantly shows us what Gods heart is, and if you dig the reasons to so many "why" questions can be found there...even why we needed the Son...

As far as David goes this is what I believe....for his sin a sacrifice was also made in the blood of his son...his baby died...once that sacrifice was made David understood that atonement had happened...David also opened the door and his sons followed in his bad example...The suffering that this sin cost David went on for generations...David is a great example to all of us that when we do sin we should mourn that sin, repent, then go live a righteous life....see that is where the victory lies...BUT if you don't know who you are in Christ/Lord in Davids case, if you don't know what your rights are you just develop a defeatist mentality that you can't do anything "right".  The truth is none of us are "right" to begin with not until we are saved...once we are we can tap into the Spirit the Lord has placed in each one of us and that POWER effects the true change in our hearts and lives...

The world, and Satan, and even other Christians may want to bring my past before me, hold me accountable for all that I have done wrong but the WORD tells me to dwell on good things and to set my thoughts there...either we are truly redeemed and what Christ did IS FINISHED or it is not.  See I believe IT IS FINISHED, it is a done deal...I no longer have to keep that old mentality of myself but get to look at myself as Christ does...he replaced our filthy rags with Robes of Righteousness we are not going to be walking around in sack cloth and ashes but as the Righteous that were Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb...

Steve I understand with jest of what your trying to say here I believe but there are some important distinctions to be made in who we once were and who we are in Christ RIGHT NOW...Since Satan is the great accuser He is the one who is constantly trying to tell us we will fail, we are NOT who we think we are, we still really have no rights.  His investment is seeing each of us bound and not walk in what God has so generously done for us all...if there is anyway He can talk you into believing your wretched He has won, because how does a wretched man walk in the grace of God, find mercy, or walk in the things of the Spirit, how is that life ever going to be victorious in Christ?  Any way Satan can kill steal or destroy He will...His biggest tool is now deception and part of our responsibility as Christians is to uncover that deception and walk in the Light...the Truth sets us free...and he who is free is free indeed!

Steve this has been one of the best blogs that I have seen in a long time that has generated such discussion...this is just what Christ wants in the body I believe, it is how we grow, it is how Satan can be defeated...

You have been a jem of a guy to take comments that appear opposing to your blog keep them posted and let people vent.  I appreciate that in you and it speaks to your maturity.  Thank you brother for being so kind to everyone....In Him, Lori

I really enjoy and appreciate all the discussion and comments here.  Thank you all for participating.

We are discussing a paradox.  We are justified in Christ, yet while we live on earth we are still human and we still have a wretched human self

Look what Jesus told a group of believers:

"But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked."  (Revelation 3:17)  Perhaps, we also, don't realize that.
November 15, 2008

It's not wretched to be human. God created us human. What made us wretched was the old sin nature. My old sin nature, or old man died, the very moment I allowed Christ to come into my heart. I do not have two opposing forces working within me. I have been re-born of the incorruptible seed.

But our old man left behind habits and thought patterns. That's where becoming a living sacrifice and renewing the mind comes into play.

We will one day be human again. When we reach our final destination, the New Earth, we are not going to be spirits without bodies. We are going to be physical beings on a physical earth. An earth without the possibility of corruption. We shall be placed back in the Garden so to speak for the purposes of dominating and ruling the earth and all creation. The way is was meant to be the first time.

I have been delivered from the evils of this present world!

Hallelujah! - Thank you for redeeming blood Jesus!

Why then, Michael, do we believers, get prideful? Tell a lie?  Get jealous?  Hold bad feelings toward others?  Fail to pray for our enemies?  Boast?   Lust?  Look down on others?  Get angry and let the sun go down on our wrath?

Believers sure don't act like their sin nature, or old man died "the very moment I (we) allowed Christ to come into my heart."  If that happened, why don't we act like it?
November 15, 2008
As I stated, our old man left behind habits and thought patterns. That's where becoming a living sacrifice and renewing the mind comes into play.

Not all of us believers "get prideful? Tell a lie?  Get jealous?  Hold bad feelings toward others?  Fail to pray for our enemies?  Boast?   Lust?  Look down on others?  Get angry and let the sun go down on our wrath? "

I am not trying to imply that I execute this Christian walk to perfection, nor even close. But I can say that I have improved by leaps and bounds. Why? Because as Lori so eloquently presented, I am empowered by the Holy Spirit which lives within me. When I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, things started changing rapidly. Praise God.

Renewing the mind is the key. It starts by focusing on what I now am in Christ, because of HIS spirit which has become my new nature, my new man. I am no longer forced or compelled to obedience of the old man.

Our hearts tend to become hardened to that which we ignore. But they become softened to that which we focus on. So are we going to focus on what a dreadful, slime-bag we were before we received the Spirit of the Lord, or are we going to focus and live in the light of the new birth?

Our imaginations are a very powerful force. But praise God, they are one area that we ourselves can control. And that's exactly the area the enemy is constantly trying to attack. He is delighted with the fact that you consider yourself to still be just a wretched human. That's a lie straight from the pit.

We will only imitate God to the degree that we renew our minds. Old habits are hard to break. But habits and thought patters is all they really are. There is no force compelling us to "get prideful? Tell a lie?  Get jealous?  Hold bad feelings toward others?  Fail to pray for our enemies?  Boast?   Lust?  Look down on others?  Get angry and let the sun go down on our wrath? "

As man thinketh in his heart, so is he.

Steve, like I tried to imply earlier. I love you in Christ. I can sense sort of an argumentative tone developing here, and I choose to digress, for that reason.

You are a blessing to this community my friend. Truly.

In my blog Spirit, Soul, and Body I go into a considerable amount of detail of how I understand the new man and how that relates to our mind, will & emotions, and our physical bodies. You may be interested in reading that.

The good news? Nothing you, I, or anyone else has said here changes the fact that God is no longer angry with us. He loves us immensely and that in itself is enough to shout HALLELUJA!

Be at peace my friend.

:-)

Steve,

Since Peter was told by Jesus to "Come!" why did Peter sink?
Since God was in Christ doing the miracles why couldn't Jesus do many in his hometown?
Since God had given the land to Israel why did a generation parish in the wilderness?
Since God looks to and fro throughout the earth to show Himself strong toward those whose heart is blameless toward him, why did Asa die sick (2 Chronicles 16:9-12)?
Paul asks us: How can we who are dead to sin still live in it?

1.  Ignorance: "Or don't don't you know (a heart thing, not a head thing) that all those who have been immersed into Christ have been immersed into his death?"

2. Unbelief (hard heart)

We sin because sin still dwells in the members of our body--our body has not been redeemed yet; we are waiting for the redemption of our bodies--and we are ignorant or unbelieving with respect to what God tells us that he has done about it (Romans 6) and how we are to then live by faith in Christ (Romans 7 - 8).

All the answers are starring at us from Romans 6 through 8 and we're insisting that we have no choice except to feel sorry enough about sin so that we won't want to sin...and I understand that.  You...just like me (and everyone else here), have one "special" sin that we cannot overcome no matter how hard we try; it brings us to despair.  Been there...have the t-shirt, several in fact.  Freedom comes when the Lord finally gets it through our heads that, that sin has already been dealt with because "we" are dead to it! So there is nothing to do about it but believe into His victory over it.  That's a Peter on the water thing were we fail (because we doubt) and then get pulled up and put in the boat again until we choose to get out on the word again.

I'll say it once again, all this is explained much more clearly that I am doing it in Dan Stones' book.

But I believe that I completely understand your perspective and, in fact, that is where 90%+ of Christians are at because all they know is the forgiveness and cleansing of their sins...they do not believe--in their heart--that they are free from sin (which still dwells in the members of our body...it has nothing to do with the old sin nature).  And, as long as we believe we still need to "get" something else, "do" something else, or "get" God to give us something (that He already says He has)...we will continue to be dominated by the flesh.

For hundreds of years Christians were taught that God no longer heals...and we believed that in our hearts...and we were never healed; for hundreds of years Christians were taught that God no longer pours out the gifts of the Spirit...and we believed that--many still do--in our hearts and we never received or move in the gifts of the Spirit.  It is always the same reason...unbelief.  God will not and indeed cannot move beyond the limits that we put on Him with our doctrines.  To Jesus' relatives he was Josephs' son; so the scripture clearly state that Jesus "could not" do many miracles for them.

It is a deception to say that it is God's will to heal "all" sometimes and a "few" other times; God laid all our sins and diseases on Christ...it is not His will that any perish.  It's not God's fault it is our unbelief that limits God.

I can only pray that the Lord would open our eyes to all that He has done for us in Christ and all that Christ would do through us.

Sincerely,
Craig

Thanks for the comments Craig and Michael.  I appreciate your opinions, but I must stick by what Jesus said in Rev. 3:17.  I love a prayer of ancient Orthodox monks that they called the Jesus prayer.  A wonderful book about it is called:  "The Way of the Pilgrim."   Monks have repeated this prayer for almost two thousand years now.  It says:  "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me a sinner."

Steve,

What's up bro?

I see you added some scripture verses.

"Because you say, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing"

Is this not talking about those that have completely turned their back on Christ. They trust not in Him nor have need of Him.

"be zealous therefore, and repent"

I was under the impression you had aleady done this.

and this,

"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."

Man, I had to really hesitate to come back and post yet another comment. But it's wrong to tell all your readers that they are still just wretched human beings. I make the assumption, of course,  that most people that read your blogs are born-again followers of Christ.

And, because Christ now lives in them, the old wretched man no longer lives!

Colossians 2:13-23 NLT

You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross

In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by his victory over them on the cross.

So don’t let anyone condemn you (including yourself) for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths. For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that realityDon’t let anyone condemn you  (including yourself) by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as,  “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.

You are a child of the King my friend.

Jesus is speaking to the church in the verses at the top -- to believers.  If He says it, it must be true.

Could it be that the church of Laodicea were not knit together with strong ties of love? Was it because they had not received an understanding of God's marvelous plan, which is Christ himself?

I want you to know how much I have agonized for you and for the church at Laodicea, and for many other believers who have never met me personally. I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God's mysterious plan, which is Christ himself

God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth. Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.

I know Steve, you are probably getting fed up with me and I don't blame you. I am just trying to encourage you my friend. Your spirit-,man is wall-to-wall holy, and righteous, and blameless.

And, I agree, apart from Christ, I can do nothing. But, thank God, I am not apart from Christ. He'll never leave nor forsake me. And through Him, in me, I can do all things because He has strengthened me!

You're alright in my book Steve. Thanks for putting up with me!

Thanks Michael.  It is really how we look at it.  If we compare ourselves to people in gross evil we look pretty good.  If we compare ourselves to God and His holiness and perfection, we don't look so hot.

Heart-felt humility before God and men is a good thing.

Steve, I didn't take your blog as stating that you/we are absolute wretches, but that when we encounter a living holy perfectly righteous powerful almighty God, our self-righteous eyes suddenly realize how lowly we are....by comparison.  "But if our unrighteousness brings out God's righteousness more clearly, what shall we say?" (Rom 3:5) But Michael, you are right on when it comes to our identity. If we consider ourselves lowly sinners by ourselves, we will probably act just like lowly sinners. But in reality, we are children and heirs of the King!!

Good points, paul.

We were told by Jesus to seek God's kingdom and His righteousness.  I believe we can spend a lifetime passionately seeking His righteousness and still not arrive at practical holiness.
