A church (little "c") is typically an organized, local body of believers -- by definition enjoying the unity of the Spirit of the Lord, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. A group of people can meet inside an ornate church building, but if they don't have the Spirit, or if they don't pursue life in the Spirit, then that mystical divine unity won't be experienced, and thus "Church" (big "C") won't be experienced or enjoyed. Unfortunately this happens a lot. But don't make the mistake (in my opinion) of thinking that the Church (big "C") doesn't need to be a church (little "c"). As the Church in the NT grew, it organized. Of course problems were encountered as they grew, but other problems were overcome through the process of organizing. Good questions, good blog. ~mike

Or they can have both a great body of believers, great liturgy, and a great archetectually well thought out building that too brings Glory to God. IOW, we can have it all.

Good question Deb!!  I see "the church" as the body of Christ on earth and all that goes along with that responsibility.

My husband and I find that what makes a Church a Church is first and foremost, God's presence.  Then the people.  It is to worship the Lord as one body and unity in Christ.  It is a place to fellowship and get to know your brothers and sisters, to love one another, to build up and encourage one another.  It is a place for teaching and learning more about God and all He is.  It should encompass all the good things of the seven churches in Revelations 2 and 3.
2:1 Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2:2 I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 2:3 And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 2:4 Nevertheless I have [somewhat] against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 2:5 Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. 2:6 But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. 2:8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and [I know] the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but [are] the synagogue of Satan. 2:10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast [some] of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 2:11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. 2:12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; 2:13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. 2:14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 2:15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 2:16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]. 2:18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet [are] like fine brass; 2:19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last [to be] more than the first. 2:20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 2:21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 2:22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 2:23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 2:24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 2:25 But that which ye have [already] hold fast till I come. 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 2:28 And I will give him the morning star. 2:29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. 3:2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. 3:3 Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. 3:4 Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy. 3:5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. 3:6 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 3:8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name. 3:9 Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. 3:10 Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name. 3:13 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. 3:14 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 3:15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 3:16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 3:21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 3:22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

I know that's a lot to digest, but I think these guidelines make up what the Church is supposed to look like.

PsalmsGirl, I definitely agree that the leaders of the church are important for the success of the church.  They are the ones that train others and lead them into doing the right things for future generations.  Like I said in my post, the preacher is the glue that holds the church together.  If he isn't doing his job right, then the whole thing falls apart.  We need to pray for our preachers and other  church leaders!

Mike, if the Holy Spirit isn't present in a church, then it isn't a church.  Unfortunately, I think that is what happened to the church I used to attend.  It had many internal struggles, and suffered even more after I left, from what I heard, losing other members, getting rid of their minister, and having a lot of strife between members.  It is sad when this happens.  People get more wrapped up in themselves than in worshiping the Lord.  He is what it is all about and we have to remember that.

Recon, yes, it is possible to have it all.  I feel I do, although the church building isn't as fancy as the one I grew up attending, it is still a nice church, with a good layout and pretty in its own right.

Beth,
12:12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--Jews or Greeks, slaves or free--and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

1 Co. 3:17:
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
1 Co. 6:19: What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God,

I think there are enough scriptures in the Bible to show that 'we' are the place where God dwells when his Spirit comes to live within us.  The word goes even so far as to say that the KINGDOM of God is within us, (Luke 17:21).  Church buildings are merely the place that houses the body of Christ when we meet for corporate worship.

Primitive religions are replete with examples of buildings and shrines as a house or shrine to an idol or a god.  The Greeks and Romans assigned to their gods splendid mansions and palaces as their dwelling places.  But the God revealed in the Bible is fundamentally different than the gods of the nations. He does not need houses or temples to dwell in---the entire universe is God's house, "the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him" and His infinite Spirit can not apparently be confined in any way to man-made dwelling places:

Thus says the LORD: "Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool; what is the house which you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things are mine, says the LORD. (Isa. 66:1)   "Am I a God at hand, says the LORD, and not a God afar off? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? says the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the LORD. (Jeremiah 23:23, 24)

Disturbed in his spirit by the profusion of false gods, images and shrines when he visited Athens, the Apostle Paul boldly reasserted that God assuredly did not dwell in buildings made by men:

...while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the market place every day with those who chanced to be there. Some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers met him. And some said, "What would this babbler say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities "--because he preached Jesus and the resurrection. And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you present? For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean." Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new. So Paul, standing in the middle of the Areopagus, said:

"Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, `To an unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything.

Once a church I was in did a pictorial directory where the company came in and took pictures of all the families and then put a book together.  I got "volunteered" to lead the committee that put together the church activities/info pages.  We were told to put a picture of the church on the front cover, so one Sunday we had everyone in the whole church come up on the stage and a photographer took a picture.  That was what we put on the cover of the directory.  A picture of the church!

The true church is in your heart and soul where you have a relationship with Jesus.
4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth. 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

The place you worship is in this past of the heart.  The buildings we worship in that are made by hands are so varied and yet if you bring your part of church to it It will be a place where the Body of Christ gets at least some organ restored to the head which is Jesus.
1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all [things] he might have the preeminence.
So what part of the body are you are you a molicule of blood or oxigen or part of the nervous system what organ do your church members make up?  Remember we can't all be part of the heart.

The Church at Large:
I think the Church at large is the total Christian population. The Church in this case is not something I can experience, but Christ can experience. Since I can't experience it, I won't type about it further.

My Local church:
My local church is a place where I can meet with other believers. It’s a place where I can serve and be served. It’s a place where I can expect a certain culture (type of songs, dress code, fellowship opportunity types, etc.).

What the Church is not:
We're to be in the world, but not of it. In my opinion, this means we aren't supposed to be a political movement. Our country expects all citizens to voice their opinion by voting, and all believers who can should vote. By political movement, I mean organizing ourselves so we can force America to function the way we say it should. That's what every other interest group is trying (unsuccessfully) to do. If we do that, we're of the world, because we don't trust God to chance our society. We should definitely let our voice be heard, but we shouldn't seek to dominate.

The Church (church) In Society
God has a plan to change society. He changes it one heart at a time. The Church (and the church) should support heart change. That's the one thing God can give the world, that world can't give itself. Of course, that means that all of us churchgoers need to allow God to change our hearts - and that's a life long process.
