| My curious fascination with blood |
|
| |
Blood makes me a little queasy and faint to look at, but yet my eyes are drawn to it with a curious fascination. It’s undeniable that there’s something very special and important about blood. Indeed, without it, we die!
17:11 For the life of a creature is in the blood…
And yet, that’s the very price my selfishness and disobedience demands. Even the tiniest act! Blood must be shed, so that there is no life left in the guilty. True, God seemed to make a way for the guilty to pay that penalty by shedding the blood of others, but yet...
10:4 …it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
This solution turns out to be incomplete, and ineffective. Yet it turned out to be a grand picture of things to come. We now know there is a blood that achieves exactly that, the removal of sins. Complete removal. Blood was shed, for you and me! All of it was shed, none held back!
26:28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I didn’t ask for it. Didn’t want it. Didn’t know I needed it. But he knew. And it was unimaginably costly!
1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 1:8 that he lavished on us.
This component of the Gospel, Christ’s blood, just fascinates me. Why would he do this for me? True, he did it for all people. But at the same time, he did it for each person! Not a Sunday goes by that Christ’s blood isn’t on my mind! Why did he spill it for me? Why? I keep turning it around in my head, but I just can’t make any sense of it!
3:19 …to know this love that surpasses knowledge
The love of Christ, expressed so personally through his precious blood shed for me, is the greatest gift imaginable, and I accept it. Humbly, so very, very humbly, I accept it. Thank you, my Lord, and my God!

I'm trying to think of a way to de-sensitize the subject of blood in the Bible. To me, blood seems a bit violent and crude especially in the context of our violent society. But, alas, blood is the essence of life itself. There is nothing more valuable than God given life. So, to give up life is the ultimate sacrifice. And to give up one's life for others...well, there's just no comparison to that. I suppose the only recourse that I have is to acknowledge that there wasn't a gushing fountain of blood spilled at the cross of Jesus...a lot of it was drained from him from the scourge he received prior.
At any rate I'm glad Jesus died for me. I'm rejoiceful that his death and spilled blood was part of God's plan for me and the rest of the world. At the same time, I'm glad that it was the last time something like that will be offered to the world; I too, get a bit queezy (sp?) talking about and looking at blood. |

| The symbol for my salvation is the blood of Jesus. A blood which was so pure, so holy and so special. That is the price paid for me. You would never ever get to see that blood once more in human history.

Awesome!
Thomas was able to stick his hand in Jesus' side after the resurrection, right?
That wound is still open. His blood still pours out covering our sins and offering forgiveness, and healing to all who will receive. Agree? |

| "...atonement, through faith in his blood" (Rom 3:25) This speaks to the issue of transubstantiation I believe. It isn't the literal consumption of flesh/blood, but FAITH in it. |

RW Schambach used to say if you want the devil to run sing the blood songs. I had a situation where a woman was mentally ill and having a frenzy attack and I was waiting for help to come. I was terrified and in my twenties at the time. I began singing Nothing but the Blood of Jesus and she calmed (me too) until they came for her. I remember reading once that scientists cannot make blood and all attempts to have tried always come up short by something they cannot identify (the life). God must laugh at man's attempts. |

Mike,
This topic is especially meaningful to me. While I had always considered myself to be Christian, it was only after a prolonged, intense period of Bible study that I began to focus more and more on the body and blood of Christ. And in one particular very late night, I kept reading the passages I had collected about the body and blood of Christ over and over and over. The intensity of the reading and prayer kept building and building until I finally gave up, pounded on the table and cried out, "God, I believe what you're telling me. I just don't get it!"
The next time I received communion, I got it! For the first time in my life, I came face to face with Christ. I was completely wrapped, immersed in His pure love for me. It was the transformational moment in my life when I truly knew that He was my Lord, my Saviour, my Love, my true Friend. It was at that moment, and every moment like it at communion since then that defines me and the quality of my relationship with Him. It is a time to reconnect with Him at such an intense level.
The words of Revelation are thus so much more meaningful and horrid to contemplate, "Depart from me for I never knew you."
The concept of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is extremely real for me. So my view of sin has changed because I now see how sin damages my relationship with Him.
JN 6:53 Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you ... drink his blood, you have no life in you. [NIV]
1CO 11:27 Therefore, whoever ... drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. 29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
Thank you, Mike.

| I don't really have a problem with the violence aspect of the blood of Jesus. When we water down the violence, we water down the need for His sacrifice. The reality of sin is that it is hideous and violent, thousands of years of sacrificing animals was not pleasing to God. It was abhorent to Him, just as our sin is abhorent. No sweet little act was going to atone for the sins of all mankind. It had to be violent, it had to be fountains and rivers. It had to be brutal, painful, disgusting, because that is what our sin is...and then God Himself stepped out of His place in Heaven and became the very recipient of all mankind's foul, disgusting, abhorent, consequences. He poured out His Life's Blood to wash away all that is vile...How GREAT is HIS Love! How absolutely violently wonderful. |
