You are so right when you state that people should be measuring by where they came from rather than how much further they have to go. We, God's people, are so hard on ourselves. We hardly ever give ourselves credit for the progress we have made. Rather we measure ourselves how how much more we have to learn, mistakes we made along the way, and whether or not we measure up to the next Christian.
Here is what God says about this matter:
3:10 and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. The NLT states you are continually being renewed as you learn about your Creator and become like him. I told my Christianity 101 class last Wednesday that without knowledge you don't grow. (See 2Peter 1:5-9) That to grow you must study to know God. Colossians 3:10 states that with a promise. It says that you will continually be renewed. That means that every day you wake up you are not the same person that went to bed the night before! AWESOME THOUGHT!
