| Sexual Sin Is Similar To Flag Burning |
|
| |
5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Burning the American flag is considered a major offense. Congress has even considered making it a crime. We don't even like it when people burn their own American flag that they paid for with their own money. Why do we take flag burning so seriously?
Is it not because of the wonderful meaning behind the American flag? In our day it stands for freedom. (In the past it used to fly over and support holding innocent people against their will in a lifetime of forced bondage and hard labor.) To most Americans today, however, our flag represents the high ideals of "liberty and justice for all". To burn the American flag, even if a person bought it himself, is to disrespect and mock our country and our freedom.
Human sexuality also represents high ideals. It is a God given means of expressing deep love and lifetime commitment between a man and a woman. It is the means by which new human beings are created. Human sexuality is also a representation and a symbol of the love, intimacy, and commitment between God and His people. In the Bible God's people are called "the bride of Christ".
That is why sexual sin is like flag burning. To misuse human sexuality is disrespect and mock the intimate relationship between God and His people. Sexual sin shows a disdain for the gift of reproducing human life and for human life in general. Since sexual sin involves using another human being for personal pleasure, it disrespects the high ideal of genuine love, which gives more than takes.
So what if flag burning was shown or referred to regularly on the vast majority of television shows? What if "Desperate Housewives" burned several American flags on each episode? What if each episode of the reruns of "Friends" not only burned several American flags, but made constant jokes about flag burning? Would that not be offensive to just about all Americans?
So what is the difference? Many Americans still love God and His high ideals. Yet many of the things we value and treasure are being publicly and continually smeared in the mud. If people in our society are going to be forbidden to burn flags, why do we freely alow them to mock morality?
Personally, I don't think we should support and encourage public flag burning. The same with sexual sin. What people do in private is their own business. But why do we take the mockery and disrespect shown by sexual sin and plaster it all over our culture. If we did that with flag burning, somebody would get mad. Do we have a double standard here? |

It's more than a double standard Steve
As water takes the path of least resistance, so also will the spirit that undermines a Godly society. If it's attempt is met with great resistance, it will put it's energy at the battlefront's that are not resisting as much. Remember it's the gates of "Hell" and evil that cannot handle the offensive moves of The Kingdom of God.
A lot of this "sexual sins" battle, in my opinion, is more smoke and mirrors, a attempt to divert our attention from, I feel, one of the main pillars that support the evil in our society. This main supporting pillar is not getting as much ":headline" news because it's old stuff, and the battle ground is not as fresh and exciting as this one, but this, is still growing out from that old battle that has not been totally won as of yet. If you ever have cut down a tree, or shrub, but not dug out and killed the stump, a lot more shoots will grow out of the stump, and if left for very long, will end up a bigger problem than the original. That old battle is the teaching of evolution. If it was totally gone from our society, it would clean up and purge a great many problems like a flow of pure water from a spring will purge the pollution (if it is kept from being continually added). This teaching is as that old stump that is sending up a lot of shoots that are waving around and getting our attention, but they in themselves are not the real problem, even though the enemy would like us to think so. The real problem is in the root system.
If our society hears that they have been made in the image of Jehovah God, The Holy Creator of all that is, if they hear that we are filled with His breath, and we should not allow any other breath come forth from us,but that of our Heavenly Fathers breath, a lot of problems would cease to exist. Kid's would have a greater respect for the lives of others, deviate behaviors would be held in the mirror of The Lord God for judging if it is or is not, instead of ,"......well if we have ascended from animals, it's not to far to regress back to animal behavior......" kind of warped thinking. Because it is the same Creator who gives us the power to overcome that which He calls sin....we are without excuse.
Thank you Steve for a great blog that jump-started these thoughts this morning ! Tom |

| Steve, I agree with your discust for the imorality we find rampant in the world. I struggle to make the connection with Flag Burning, however. God doesn't care if you burn a flag... UNLESS, it hurts someone... right? You could burn a box of them in fron of me and it would not bother me. I would hope that you had not spent much of your resources to do so, but anyway... I say this only because I believe that 'raised High above our heads' like they are, misdirects attention to what strength really is and where strength really comes from. If God moves His people onto a newly formed island somewhere, tommorow, will we be taking that flag with us... and why? Sexual Immorality is not similar, in that, if you commit it in the (percieved) privacy of your own home... someone is hurt. God is hurt. I agree with Tom, that the root problem is mans ignorance (in my words) of the Truth. What you are doing here at MC, Steve is one of the ways we can help with these issues, and that is Spreading the Truth. Keep it up. God says, I will watch over my word to perform it. |

Preston:
I am referring to the meaning behind both. A national flag means so much more than just a piece of cloth. And a sex is so much more than a physical activity. To disrespect either is more than a personal matter. Both have implications beyond the physical. |

| we are: We are not the offended party by other's sin, unless it is directed toward us, so vengeance has nothing to do with it. As you point out, it is more a product of sowing and reaping. If someone throws a brick in the air and then stands still and lets it hit them in the head, there is no vengeance involved. They did it to themselves. Sexual sin causes much havok in people and in society. It is not the innocent thing that our culture has made it out to be. |

| Interesting concept, Sheree, that "we beat down the Wisdom of God." How true. Rather than receiving God's wisdom on how to use what He created, we instead resist and fight his ways. |

| Brother Steve, Will burning a flag send you to Hell? Will lusting after your neighbour wife?As bad, an unthinkable is burning a flag is, will it take you to Hell? Will that separate you from the love of God? I love America, I cherish the flag. I'll stand for Jesus, while America turns it's back on God. 34 days until Obamanation begins. Will the liberals allow you the freedom of religion we've enjoyed? Watch the change in attitude towards Christians, Sexuals sins will not be condemned under Obama. |
