Hi Brian & Diane,

The Nephilim the Hebrew word for "giants." Sons of God is refering to the angels that God originally created that rebelled along with Satan. As you can see in the verses below, they were quite evil and spread they evilness throughout that region-multiplying the "giants in the land."

King James Version:
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

New Living Translation:
4 In those days, and even afterward, giants[1][Hebrew Nephilim. ] lived on the earth, for whenever the sons of God had intercourse with human women, they gave birth to children who became the heroes mentioned in legends of old.

If you want to read more, my bookstore, Bible Store and more, has some great Bible Search Tools. Here's a link to Matthew Henry's commentary on Gen 6:4:

If you really want to study this topic more, you might want to go to biblestoreandmore.com and search, "nephilim." There are quite a few Biblically based books there on Nephilim.

Just so you have a balanced perspective, more interpreters don't see Genesis 6 as a reference to angels at all.  The terms nephilim ("giants") and "men of renown" are a colloquial for heroes or perhaps the kings of the time (as Walter Kaiser interprets it).  Contrary to some interpretations, this is not a reference to some "superrace" of "superhumans".  Rather, it is perhaps a reference to their regal stature and legendary descriptions.  The fact that God judges human beings and not the angelic ones is evidence enough that the subject is NOT fallen angels here.
