I AGREE!!!
And that's why I no longer make resolutions. If I am going to change something, it needs to be when I think of it. Not for planning on "New Year's Day", or "Monday", or "next week".
Last September or October, I started a new church, I quit smoking, and I became SOOOO much closer to God. I didn't wait, I did it when I felt led. And I am in a much better place because of it!
Is Satan still working on me? Oh yea! Will he win? NO WAY IN HEAVEN! It just pushes me closer to God!!

HUGS!!

Mike, you wrote:

When the effort to change eventually fails, we subsequently feel powerless, defeated, and depressed. The perception of another great opportunity to change ourselves lost, we resign ourselves and sink deeper into the pit of self-condemnation. Defeated, they cry, “It’s useless, I’ll never change!” The devil couldn’t be happier than when people, especially believers, become entrapped in a life of failure and futility!!

Brother, felt like you had bugged my camper, wow!

I have a goal to be debt free and then bought a couple of dvd's yesterday I didn't need. I felt defeated. I tithe and give and want to give more and pay off more and found out some folks don't have heat or jobs and I didn't need these dvds even if they are used.

I got into condemnation. and then just read this and know what?...it isn't futile, I am going to change and find my fulfillment in other things or more things.

I had a great time with my friend having breakfast outdoors in 21 degree weather and firepit warmth and it didn't cost a thing but a bit of wood and food. We laughed and prayed and had unbelievers for breakfast who bowed their heads as well. Life has to get more simple for me and I won't give up. If I stumble, I will pick myself up and glorify God for another chance.

It actually lines up with today's verse: Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

How timely because since I responded last time in this same blog, less than four hours ago, I blew it with my mom. She thinks it is a mistake to get a repeat colonoscopy. I wouldn't have told her but was trying to work out the logistics of a ride to the hospital because I will be sedated, can't drive myself. She told me they will just find something wrong with me so they can operate and make money. This is an opinion I had heard a thousand times and I know that isn't true but in my frustration, I yelled and told her I was in pain and last time I had precancerous polyps and I started crying and left. I can't even call her as their phone is on the blink and I am now a half hour away.

I got my nephew lined up to take me but now I have to fix it because of my tearful exit. I know she doesn't need that at age 72 and I need tougher skin. She hasn't been to the doctor except once in 43 years. For a new year starting on a positive note, I have already blown it and the day isn't over. Lord please forgive me and help me to run to you when I do.

I know folks speak of having tears in their eyes when they write. I am seriously sobbing and saying it only because I know there are others who are as well for one reason or another. I told Stu-prince in a private message, I feel small to lose it over something so small since he just lost his nephew. ( Carrie Ann just lost Jeff and Restore her brother in law and Miz Joey her Aunt...on and on) but I am giving the honest report here. Sometimes I am fragile with the small stuff. I want to be always strong but I am going to give it to Him once again and try again tomorrow.

Amen Mike  the real change comes from within... Happy New Year

Hi Mike.  2009 is a chance to turn the page, make new decisions and change direction.  And forgive me for saying this, but it won't happen overnight - and that's why there's 365 days in each year (366 in a leap year).  Its a day by day process, and we can only do it one day at a time.  And somewhere in the bible it states a "little by little" approach to things.  Man plans his steps, God directs his path, and He does it little by little. We may have lept into 2009, but whatever day it is - we can only make that journey into progress throughout 2009 one day at a time.

Jacqui, what a nice comment...and I like the comparison to the crysalis. We must see the process through (at least as far as we can see it in this lifetime)....

Stevie, amen bro...gradual continuous real change (death), a process made possible by the sudden change our belief in Christ wrought in us... that's what I'm talkin about! The new life God breathed into us at conversion may or may not be something we actually feel at this point in our lives, but that conversion left us with the Holy Spirit and the power to die a little more, daily, to what we previously considered that which made us us!

Great post Mike...I hate New Years.  I would rather not mark the passing of time and growing older.  However, things do change and grow older and I have to accept that.  However, we can become new in Christ any time of the year, no matter what.  We don't need to make any new years resolutions, except to grow closer to Christ.  I don't make resolutions except that one.

Juanita, powerful comment(s)... It takes real strength to pick up the pieces after a perceived failure, and start moving again in the direction of sanctification and holiness. No lie, more times than I can recount, I've resolved to give up this or that, or start doing this or that, as of such and such a day (typically New Years, or a birthday, or some other "special" day), only to slip up later and subsequently give up. In the last 4 years though, I've managed to ignore (or conquer?) the temptation to give up, and have maintained more or less continuous momentum in God's direction. This has given me cause to celebrate today, and glorify God in the highest, for the real, and dramatic, changes I see in my life as I look back.

I will pray that God gives you an opportunity to patch things up w/your mom real quick. Family relationships are easy to have blow ups, due to the familiarity factor. But I am confident your mom knows you better and will be quick to forgive...if she hasn't already.

As for the dvd's, enjoy em, thank God for his provision of simple pleasures, and strengthen your resolve not to end your running conversation w/God when you are in stores where you might be tempted to spend $. We all need to give ourselves a little slack...everyone slips. God's love doesn't end just b/c we've snuck a cookie from the cookie jar!

3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3:3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
This scripture is one at the top of my "life changing list".Hey gang we are "hidden in Christ".Our mistakes are under the Blood of Jesus,When we daily confess to Him our sins(1 john 1:9).Mike I submit a daily resolution list.Happy New Day everyone!!!

My cup of coffee was good, (nothing new about it)... and the kid across the street popped firecrackers as usual.  Greg was asleep... nothing new about that.

However...   I stayed awake until 4:00am watching Hallmark movies.    that was new for me.

Maybe next year I will drink Orange Juice out the Jug.

Mike, you truly minister to me in your comments. I got a break on my camper rent from 132.50 to 105.00 weekly so that is about a hundred bucks to apply to credit cards.

I will enjoy my cookies and ask God for the strength to be faithful in my finances. Mom and I will be pals again soon. Just tense right now due to chronic pain for one thing.

Hey Mike and Laura and the Family, Wish you all a very Happy New Year! Like all other blogs, you always have a point to convey. Expecting a New Year was fun when I was a kid.... Stay awake to go to Church... You have to go early otherwise you dont get place in the pews... you know why... many people come to church on that day.... some of them are visitors visiting their family... and some of them come to church on three days in a year ( On christmas day, new year day and on easter day... why dont you write a blog on this topic too). When I grew up it was a family re-union ...Visit them during the season... Then came the year 2000...Every one was interested to see if one lived beyond 11:59:59 to see if the world is going to end. Now, as you rightly said it has become another day.... All the same... whether it is the first day of the year or the last day of the year we have to know our vision and mission and realise our purpose in this world. The Saviour gave His life for us and we have to keep this in our minds always. Thank you for the reminder though! Wish you all a very Happy and Prosperous and Blessed New year in the Lord. May He grant you the desires of your heart so that you will be a blessing to many others who are around you! Ragland

Happy New Year Mike!

You wrote:

"The devil annually uses the ruse of New Years Day to entrap and discourage believers and non-believers alike. Every year millions optimistically list the bad habits they intend to cease, and the good practices they intend to start, as of New Years Day. When the effort to change eventually fails, we subsequently feel powerless, defeated, and depressed. The perception of another great opportunity to change ourselves lost, we resign ourselves and sink deeper into the pit of self-condemnation. Defeated, they cry, “It’s useless, I’ll never change!” The devil couldn’t be happier than when people, especially believers, become entrapped in a life of failure and futility!!"

The person we were in "Adam" cannot be changed or reformed...that's why we were put to death in Christ.  The miracle is: God transferred us out of Adam and put us into Christ!  So that we can actually say that we were executed with him and have been raised a new creation with and in Him.  God will do nothing with the Old Man except put him to death (all in Adam must die).  Abiding "in Christ" means, among other things, that we believe that we have become partakers of the Divine Nature through Christ and that He himself is now our life.  Christ does not sin and if we abide in him neither will we.  Learning to do that is the great adventure!

The above quoted "commitment" or "resolution" is exactly the same thing as law.  It is an appeal to self dependence to change the nature of "the flesh."  The flesh cannot and never will change...its deeds are put to death by walking by the Spirit.  As it is written, if we walk by the Spirit we will not "carry out" the desires of the flesh.  That is the only way out!  It is a change of identity and a change of expectation!  We do not expect "self" to be good, but we expect Christ in us to be good.  If we are ignorant of the realities of who we are "in Christ" (what things we are dead to in him and what things we are alive to in him) then we will live as mere men and Paul would call us "carnal" or fleshly Christians (1 Corinthians).

This adventure is made more difficult by the fact that most Christian teaching speaks to trying to reform the flesh rather than walk by the Spirit: letting the One who is good live through us.  He was and is the only one who can actually live the Christian life.  If we could live it (like following an algorithm or set of instructions) then we would end up having something to boast about...but "let him who boasts, boast in the Lord!"

Best regards,
Craig

Craig, I am so very glad you caught this subtle detail. I believe that's why the trap is so effective. Changing ourselves appeals to us all. But as you said so well, God must change us. Thanks for sharing, and Happy NY bro.

Rag....so good to hear from you! I hope your NY's celebrations were blessed and enjoyable...and hope 09 is great for you too!

Mike great blog, for years i often wondered about new year's resolutions, then i came to the understanding that they are like vows that we make and don't keep. "It is better to not make a vow, than to make a vow and not keep it". I in my personal life asked God to give me a heart that like jimmie would learn to confess my sins daily understanding the fact that i mess up daily, and believing His Word that as i confess, He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse me from all unrighteousness.  I have never made new years resolutions and now i know why i will never make them, God speaks daily and whatever He decides He wants to deal with, remove and/change He will if we get out of His way.
