GEN chapter 12
The thing that really popped out to me was verses 15-20 That Hagar was sobbing but the the God heard the boy's cry one he was at least 14yrs old at this point which I found interesting and why did God hear him crying, was it because he was blameless in all of this or because he was in covenant through Abraham. Either way it just reinforced the importants that we are blameless in Christ Jesus and that we are in covenant through Jesus that these things are so important for the father to hear our crys. Now the other thing is God heard the boy's cry's but he opened the mothers eye's is there something there about parent authority? God can hear your cry's but the answer can come through your parent. No matter what that parent has done or not done. Not to mention God didn't create a well he opened her eyes to see the answer that was already there. Interesting !!!! |

Ishmael (Hagar's son) was fourteen years old. He had just had his world fall apart. His dad, who he loved dearly and who he thought loved him, had sent him and his mom packing. No way they could survive!
Some things we can learn about Ishmael. He was a typical teen boy. Lots of attitude and inappropriate behavior. His "stepmom" did not like him and hated his mom. When Sarah caught him making fun of her precious infant she demanded Abraham to "Get rid of that slave woman and her son" (NIV Gen . 21:10).
It wasn't long before the supplies they had were gone in the desert. Hagar knew adversity, doing without, hard times. But not Ishmael. All Ishmael knew was being the son of an incredibly rich man and the comfort of the lifestyle. There were servants who attended to his every need or desire. But here in the desert he was dying of thirst and there was nothing he could do about it. So he did what he always did when he didn't get what he wanted, he cried and whined.
Hagar knew the reality of the situation. There would be no help. There were no servants. They were alone and her son was way too soft to survive the hardship of the desert. He was going to die. She could not stand to watch and she walked away from him.
Did the reality set in with Ismael when his mom walked away? Now here he is truly alone. No one to protect him, care for him, comfort him. And perhaps for the first time in his life Ishmael thought of the GOD his father had always talked about. But they were just stories. Ishmael knew that his dad got all he had by hard work and outsmarting others not by GOD. But now, if there was a GOD, if what his dad had said about GOD hearing us in our times of trouble were true.....
And for the first time in his life a proud, insolent young man lifted his voice in prayer, tears streaming down his face. There were no "thee's" or "thou's". No practiced phrases or technique. Just the desperate plea of a scared, lonely, dying child.
Rick, there is so much in this story. Like the first time Hagar had run away when she had become pregnant by Abram (Abraham) those many years earlier and Sarai made her life a living hell. GOD stopped her and reassured her and sent her back. Did life get better for Hagar? Not really. Other than the joy she had in her son, Ishmael, Sarai was still her owner and probably did things to her to make life miserable. But she stuck it out because of a promise GOD had made and the life her son was able to have.
Now many years later all was lost. For all those years she obeyed GOD. For what? To watch her son die. She was angry. She was bitter. She was hurt. And she couldn't deal with it anymore. She walked away from her son who was her only reason for living. Now she had no reason to live. She sobbed as her heart broke for her son and for herself. Why did GOD fail her?
In the midst of this hopeless family tragedy GOD "answered" both "prayers". GOD opened Hagar's eyes and Ishmael drank. Ishmael changed. The once helpless Ishmael became strong and independent. Hagar had her faith restored and lived out her days with thankfulness.
Just because we do what is right does not mean life will be right. Life is not always fair. But somehow in the midst of all that is wrong GOD is working in ways we cannot see. And when we get to the breaking point we react in two ways, like Ishmael or Hagar. If it ain't broke GOD will fix it. Because until we are truly broken we can never be whole.
.....peace..... |
