| (Part 3 and final part) Do the Ten Commandments Apply in Today’s World? |
|
| |
The greatest commandment, 22:36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" 22:37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. 22:38 This is the great and first commandment. 22:39 And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 22:40 On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. How does one love the Lord God with all of our hearts, souls and minds? Especially with so many distractions in this world and in our lives. It takes dedication to remember that our Lord is the most important thing in this world. All the other “stuff” is just secondary. He wants us to live in this world, take care of what belongs to us, love our families, friends, everyone, enjoy our lives, turn to Him in all things, handle the difficulties with His help, thank Him for the things He gives us, use the gifts that He has given us wisely, but most importantly, we are to Love Him with all of our being. He should come first in our marriages, our jobs, with our children, our home life, other family members, all problems and all good things. If He is first, then everything else will fall into place. Will it be easy? No. Will it be boring? No. Will it bring satisfaction in this life? You bet. He made us, He gave us His son, He wants us to love Him. That is all He asks.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
Can we really Love everyone? The murderer, the rapist, the homosexual, the robber, that person that cuts you off in traffic, or gets in front of you when a new check out line opens up at the grocery store…Those that have intentionally hurt you, or adulterers, or people who have had abortions, or those that don’t love God or don’t believe He even exists? I know I will probably leave something out here, but imagine the most difficult person to love, and imagine yourself loving that person? The way God intended us to “love our neighbor”. Can you really do it? I know I can’t. Not without God’s help, and only through Him can I even begin to think about it! It is easy to love your family or friends (in most cases), or all the good, honest people of the world. But it takes God’s help to love the most unlovable.
There is a guy at church whose father was a policeman and was killed in the line of duty. He said that he was able to forgive this man for killing his dad, but to love him? Not so easy. And he isn’t able to now, but he is praying about it for Jesus to help him.
This is all for the Ten Commandments blogs. The commandments are there for a reason. Don’t forget to follow them, live them, defend them if need be. Living a life for Christ is the main reason we are here. Follow His words.

These two are the ones I love the most.
These two are the ones I love the most. And I pray I never become rich enough to put things before God. Amen!

I agree with you that "all the other stuff is secondary". If we concentrate on living our lives in such a way to love God with all we have, every thing else should fall in place. I challenge people when they worship to do it as though they really are walking out this commandment - to love the Lord with all we have. I suggest they start at home and worship there as if there is nothing else in the world that matters. IMHO, and maybe it was only for me, but when I learned to worship freely, I started to understand how to love freely, too, so the second commandment listed here started being easier to walk out. It never really is truly "easy", but His burden is light.
Deb, thanks for this series of posts. Good things to keep us thinking. |

Lisa, that would be so helpful, to have a way to look up the Greek for a word. Everyone who is serious about studying the bible should have access to the Greek, myself included. I will have to look into tht
DC, I think it makes sense that if we love God with our whole beings, that we will be able to love others too. Glad you enjoyed this series. |

Thanks for this series, Deb. It is great to read this stuff, it really has reinforced some key points of our faith. And I agree w/Voice, when we worship freely our "self" kinda goes out the window, and the Lord's commands become all the more easier to obey. Thus the importance of nonstop worship, every day, every hour! ~mike |

A "Strong's Exhastice Concordance of the Bible with
Greek Hebrew and Chaldee Dictionaries" is a good study book to have especially when like myself the memory starts fading. You know you know a scripture but where is it this book will find it if you but know a few works of the scripture. and you can look up what the original language and deffination was in that scripture. |

Mike, I am glad that you enjoyed the series. Thanks for your comments...
Valerie, I was just trying to find a verse today, and I have a small concordance in the back of my bible, but it would be nice to have something a little more substantial...this is a good suggestion. Thanks! |
