My reading of the purpose for a certificate of divorce in Deuteronomy 24 is so that women who have been victimized by hard-hearted men leaving them can remarry in order to find a man to provide for them. Maybe a pastor (or two) would like to chime in as well? ~mike

I do believe that your mother IS free to remarry.  Here is my Biblical support.....

7:11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to [her] husband: and let not the husband put away [his] wife. 7:12 But to the rest speak I, not the Lord: If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. 7:13 And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him. 7:14 For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. 7:15 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such [cases]: but God hath called us to peace.

So I think the key words in what you wrote it "Dad left."  If Mom left, then mom is not free to remarry, according to 1 Corinthians 7:11.  But if he left, then it says that "A brother or sister is NOT under bondage in such cases."

I know it's hard, because we as humans have the tendency to pull one scripture out of contexts and run with it.  But we must look at the entire Bible to determine truth.   I think the Matthew verse is talking to the men who leave and not the women who are the victims.  Basically them leaving is causing the women to be free to remarry, which means she will become one with someone else.  I don't think that this verse is saying that the women is the sinner, but the man for leaving.

Just my thoughts, but a very good question.  I am blessed to see a heart that only wants to know the truth of God's Word.  Awesome!
