Piano Lessons
|

When I was in first grade, my parents made me start taking piano and voice lessons. I hated them, I cried and cried. Most kids got the summers off from lessons, but not Cindy. This carried on for eight years. I began to love the voice, but I never liked the piano, singing came easy. Come recital time, I would either sing and play, or if I had my way, I’d just get to sing.
In learning to play the piano there is a lot of memorization. You memorize everything, the keyboard becomes part of you. You never look at it, you have it memorized. Then you start memorizing the music. I have so many songs still in my head, they’re there for the rest of my life and when I do sit down to play, they are transformed from notes in my brain to beautiful sounds from the keyboard. The bad thing is, I don’t play much anymore. My piano is an upright antique grand and it needs a lot of work. Therefore, when I sit down to play, it’s slow in coming back to me and there’s a lot of missed notes because I haven’t practice it daily.
Christian life is a lot that way. We start out memorizing the Word, we hide it in our hearts. Then we may move on to Greek and Hebrew translations, we want to dig deeper. We’re moving up the scale. We move from Chopsticks to Bach. We’re really proud of our progress. We can roll His Word off our tongues with no thought to it. That’s the problem……no thought! We can give deeper meaning to it with our Greek and Hebrew, all memorized. We can even start using different Bible translations. We have the right verses for everyone….hmmmm. Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful to have all that….but are you using it daily in your life or do you reserve it for others who need it more, since you already have it all down?
I have a couple of sayings I love…..one is “ Practice what you preach!” and the other is “I’d rather see a sermon than to hear one any day!” Quoting the Word to me and all the translations really means nothing, if you’re not applying it to yourself too. We have to keep the lessons going in our lives, we have to use the Word in our lives, we have to put it into action…….for it to be real and not just words stored in our brain. If you give me a verse on love, let me see you using it, because I can look up the same verse, translation, Greek, Hebrew, whatever……but I want to know what it’s done for you…..show me, tell me. We get rusty when we sit back, thinking we’ve learned enough to help others, the words are just words in our brains, and like the piano, making those notes in our brains into beautiful sounds is slow or nonexistent, and we miss a lot of keys (blessings in the case of God).
So, where are you today? Are you playing God’s tunes from memorization? Is it sounding rote by this time? Or are you applying it daily? Putting it into action? Are you sounding like a clanging cymbal? Or are you growing yourself in the knowledge God has given you, then stepping out to help others grow?
I have never seen a pianist who is already there and can’t learn more or expand more. And I’ve never met a christian who is perfect in the Lord, already. Have you?

Yeah, well this is why I'm not blogging in the same way til I get my butt in gear. And like I said to my hubby last night, I know the Godly advice; the Scriptures; the right things to say....and yet...it's hollow when you aren't living it. It lacks power without the power of the Holy Ghost flowing out of you. Sorta like when we spoke of saying "I love you." same thing, really. But I can't be silent. Nor will I pretend I'm Ms. super spiritual. The thing is, I see ppl who profess to have great freedom and such an awesome walk with the Lord, and yet they lack love. They are proud and haughty and talk down to others. So what's worse? Quoting it, admitting where you're at, or quoting it, being deceived in your pride, thinking, 'this poor soul! I'm sooooooooooo far ahead of them. I am way past that, so here's the answer, period.'

Wow, great word CindyLou. I was just reading this morning about the importance of personal application. I had a great quiet time today, reading about two kinds of wisdom (James), and the difference between wisdom and knowledge. My family is reading through Proverbs together right now, and the topic of wisdom is one we have all put a lot of thought into lately. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

Practice what you preach - AMEN
Application of the word for some is hard to apply because they do not truly believe. It is only words in a book to them. Jesus came so that we may apply(use) His word....

My mom had me take piano lessons, too. The teacher finally told her that I had no talent and to quit wasting her money. LOL! :) :) :) I am SOOO glad that God isn't that way! I may be slow to catch on, but He is ever-patient!
