| America 2009: Will Christians Be Left Behind? |
|
| |
Today is a new day in America, an historic day, a day that will be talked about for centuries. We, you and I, are here to witness it.
African-Americans are crying in joy and disbelief at the inauguration of one of their own as President of the United States. Millions of Americans of every race and creed have descended upon the capital city to be a part of the celebration.
Even before taking office, incoming President Barack Obama has managed to upset all groups of people. Many didn't like his choice of conservative Christian Rick Warren to bring the inaugural invocation. And those who were pleased with that choice have been upset over other special invited speakers. President Obama seems to be saying to the nation that he will not pander to any group above others, but that he will promote a nation of equality and respect for all people.
Despite whatever personal disappointments we may have with his positions, Obama seems to understand the meaning of our American freedoms. Freedom of religion, not just for Christians, but for all Americans, even though he himself is Christian. The right of all Americans regardless of race, creed, orientation, or gender, to be treated with equal respect and equal rights. Offensive, isn't it? Only because we want our own rights to be greater than everyone else's . . .
Many conservative Christians did not vote for Obama, and many are still shouting their dismay for all to hear, hoping for Obama to fall so they can say "I told you so." Many of these same people otherwise claim to believe that all things work together for good under God's sovereign rule.
For those who can get beyond politics, there is a new hope in the air today. No assurances. No guarantees. But something wonderfully hopeful. Is it possible to unite as a nation, with Blacks, Whites, Hispanics, Muslims, Jews, Protestants, Democrats, Republicans, Men, Women, Old, and Young, all living together in mutual respect? Caring for each other despite our differences? Is this not a Christian concept?
I have been impressed with the initiatives to spread volunteerism in every American community, making, not just the nation as a whole, but our own little worlds, better places to live. What if Christians joined this initiative and encouraged all others in our communities to work alongside us? Is personal politics worth missing out on what God may be doing in America?
Yet, interestingly the conservative Christian community may be the one group most resistant to this new hope. No family values, they quip. Have they been watching Obama with his family? No Christian values, they say. Have they listened to him talk about his faith, and watched him go to church even this historic morning, or are they listening to what others are writing and telling them to think?
No president is a savior. No president will ever perfectly embody every opinion or value each of us holds. No good president will attempt to turn this nation into a Christian state at the expense of others' freedoms. Christians will have to learn to share America's freedoms.
Will Christians be left behind? It's their call. As for me, my tv is on,and I am crying with all those telling their stories. Not because the nation is perfect. But because there are new hopes, and I choose to participate in them. Will you choose to ignore today and wish it over, or will you watch the inauguration festivities with me and pray a prayer of hope for our great nation? God is at work! 2:16 Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil; but live as servants of God. 2:17 Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor. |

Ah Kathy, You put things in such a challenging way (challenge meant as a good thing, not confrontational), at very least, we need to pray for the President and his family. I want all these new people, drawn in by this hope of Obama, to see a positive side of politics. I myself am very tired at the division a rhetoric, but no real direction. If Obama can lead a good fight, then I think it will, in the long run, be positive. There are many tests ahead, and in fact he comes in at a time of great potential, both for success, and for failure. If we believe that our prayers move Heaven and Earth, then this is the time to move them. We need this to be a time of unity and renewal for our country. I do pray it will be on his watch, I'm fearful of the results if it isn't. |

Pray a prayer of hope for our great nation. God is at work!
Amen!!!
I am so excited, so hopeful that God has heard our prayers and is leading this nation to unity once and for all. It will be a hard fight and I pray that we, as a nation, will open our ears and hear the word of God. It is not about you and me but about ALL AMERICANS( black, white, latino, hispanic, asian, etc.) to join hands and hearts together and get this country back where it needs to be for our children and their children. GOD has not left us if we will just let Him have His way.....
Pray, pray until the heavens open up and pour out blessings abundantly.......
GOD BLESS AMERICA |

"WILL CHRISTIANS BE LEFT BEHIND?" no, I don't think so Kathy, not the ones that are Christ-like anyway. Some of the religious, or social Christians probably will, but there is still time, at this time to catch up at least. I am very excited about the future of America, in a optomistic way, and looking forward with anticipation to see what's going to happen in the next four years, and yes, I will be participating in what The Lord calls me to do wihin this time. As I hope we all will. |

Well Kathy, His inaugural speech was a good start. I also liked that he didn't do the oath cleanly, sometimes things can be too perfect. He showed a bit of his humanity there, but I liked the start. It was a very strong juxtaposition to see buildings build with slaves as part of the workforce, and a man who's father would only have been in attendance as a servant a generation ago. We have lived in a marvelous time. I hope that not only my African-American daughter-in-law is proud, but all the others of many ethnic mixes in my household. It also touched me that he was careful to bring to mind those in harms way, I also have a son-in-law there..... |

Thank You Kathy~ Angel and I continue to appreciate Your Ministry, through Christ Jesus. I have just posted a Memo stating that the most perfect Standard of a Ruler in Government is The Lion of The Tribe of Judah, Christ Jesus. If a Ruler is to be recognized by Jehovah God, then she/he must govern as Christ Jesus will govern in the millennial Kingdom. I ask all people everywhere if their Rulers/Governers are COMPROMISERS WITH satan, or, are they ruling as Our Savior will rule/govern in the MILLENNIUM. Abundant Blessings to You and all who You Love, Kathy.......Ken & Angel ORR. |

Dennis: "There are many tests ahead, and in fact he comes in at a time of great potential, both for success, and for failure." You are so right! As the black community has long known, he will have to be "twice as good" to meet public approval, and I think he has that much potential! His strengths, which include orating and intelligence, are even above that mark! Will we, the American people, however, allow him the grace to occasionally be a human being, leaving room for imperfection? Will we allow him to have weaknesses and to disappoint us once in a while, as every other person we know also does? Or will we take the low road and rejoice in his failures, in an attempt to build ourselves up? As he proves who he is, so will we as Christians also prove who we are.
Darlene, me too! I think I watched 5 hours of inauguration festivities today, and I am so very proud to be American! I cried at many points, and I found the many prayers a deeply spiritual experience. God has been acknowledged, invoked, and thanked so many times throughout this great ceremony, both by our new president and by those he invited for the occasion.
Sherlock, prayer is the greatest gift and participation we can ever offer! I'm glad to see you are already reading and sharing in the blogs! Welcome to MyChurch! |

Amen, Mary! Well said! "join hands and hearts together and get this country back where it needs to be for our children and their children" I like this focus! If we cannot give our new president a chance for any other reason, may we do it for our children's future! We are quickly losing our children from the church. They are perceiving our arrogance and closed minds and translating that to the irrelevance of the church. May we step down from having all the answers and listen. There may be something worth hearing. Something that might bring real unity to our country.
Tom, amen! I'm beside you!
Amen, Lynne! Did you get much snow? We only got a good powdering, but it was enough to close the schools so I could watch the inauguration today! Thank you, God, for gentle gifts! :) |

I'm glad you got to watch, Dennis! The entire coverage was a spiritual experience for me! I am so glad I had a snow day so I could watch! I think those "in harm's way" and their families will be one of Obama's many concerns. Michelle hosted a huge concert (last night?) of the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and other teen/tween heart throbs, and the guests were all children of those who serve. It was quite an event!
Thanks for your comments, Ken! Jesus is indeed the ultimate measure of a ruler. However, I wonder how many of us would vote for a homeless itinerant story-telling carpenter! There were those who would make Him king, but He made it clear that His kingdom was not an earthly one. Thankfully this morning we inaugurated a new leader who prays to the same Heavenly Father that Jesus prayed to, and looks to the same Heavenly Father for guidance that we do! |

Here is my opinion: Obama has a way of keeping God in our country already. There has already been a stink about that Obama was sworn in on the Bible, and that so help me God was in the oath. Fact is Obama wanted them to be in there. I believe this country was founded on Christianity and the core should stay that way even as we allow others the freedom to their own religion. In my family we have a Buddhist and she respects us as we respect her. It is my prayer that we continue to be a country set up as a Christian country as it was founded while still allowing freedom to religion. God gives us the choice of accepting Him just as he gave Adam and Eve the choice to do or not to do. This is a very good post. It's time for everyone to move on and support our new leader and surround him with prayer. |

Hi Tyler! I love meeting people you're age who analyze and synthesize! Thank you for your comments here! You make some good observations. Indeed, despite all those unfounded rumors that were going around (even on this site) about Obama before the election (he was a terrorist, he was a Muslim, he was going to swear in on the Koran . . .), he carefully chose the Bible that would be used in his swearing in, and he ignored the pleas for "so help me God" to be left out.
I think certain groups were hopeful that he would be "their" president. The atheists thought this would be their chance to get rid of such Christian wording. The gay community was disappointed when He chose someone in favor of Proposition 8 to pray the invocation this morning. Others were not happy with his choice of Bishop Gene Robinson for a prayer at one of the earlier events. It seems Obama is "offending" every group, and in so doing, saying that he is an advocate for everyone, not for any pet group. If he continues as he has begun, he seems to be an advocate of true equality for all people. He will defend the rights of Christians but equally atheists and Buddhists. He will defend the rights of women, but equally men. Of African-Americans, but equally caucasians and Asian-Americans. He will defend the rights of heterosexuals, but equally homosexuals. He has apparently read the constitution, and he swore today to uphold it. If we are offended so far, it is likely that we believe our own rights are more important than someone else's.
Everyone believes his own "groups" to be superior. That's why he has chosen to be a part of them. Where I believe Christians sometimes fall short, however, is in taking that belief to the extreme of believing that others do not deserve the same constitutional rights that we do. It is possible to believe that Hindus are wrong about God but still believe that they have as much right to their beliefs as I do to mine, and even to fight for their rights because it was on just such freedom that our nation was framed. |

Thanks for speaking up on this important topic Kathy. I too kept "choking up" at various times as I watched and listened to an hour or so of today's events. The Spirit of the Lord was present indeed...
Is it okay if I mention www.presidentialprayerteam.org here? This is NOT a political organization. It is a wonderful team of persons of various persuasions who are willing to pray for our leaders, our nation, and our troops. Some of you may want to check it out if you aren't already familiar with it. I highly recommend it. |

Hi Pastor Tim! Thank you for adding your thoughts. I'm always glad for your input! Of course you are right that no president is a messiah and that no human being should ever be blindly followed. I think you would agree that is certainly not what I'm advocating here. As long as we are humans, we will all get some things wrong. Surely Obama is no exception, and no other possible president would have been. Unity never implies total agreement, but total respect on equal ground. These are words that Christians often use, but sometimes they don't come through in practice. |

| Ma'am I have the upmost respect for you however Obama having famliy values is not why Conservative Christians Did not vote for him. I think it has more to do with what you have called christianity the black theology that Barack Obama's reverend preeches the fact that God hates white people is in his preechings and teachings. The fact that this man was the one that turned Obama to Jesus that os what scares us. I would challenge you to do a little research on Obama's church and maybe you will realize our fear. However as a christian conservative I feel I should inform you that I pray for this man I pray that he does good for our country but most of all I pray for the americans who blindly follow him only seeing his skin color and not the content of his character. Thank you and God Bless you :) |

Kathy, I appreciate your comment that "no president is a savior" and also Pastor Tim, that the president is not a Messiah. I'm sure Obama would agree in the blink of an eye. There is that Messiah feeling with any charismatic leader, but anyone who imagines Obama is more than a human being will be disillusioned. One of my work colleagues cautioned that events like these bring out the "fair-weather patriots." Then almost immediately apologized. But the point is well taken and we can't afford to be fair-weather patriots or into a cult of personality. However ... i am just so happy today. This morning I was driving to work listening to news on the radio, and the tears just came to my eyes and streamed down my cheeks. I heard /read several people with issues about Rev. Warren but he gave a lovely invocation, he was conscious of the occasion and careful to include everyone. I loved too the President's words that expressed care for all Americans and also a sense of responsibility for people outside our borders, especially the poor. If we can keep that attitude toward one another then there is no limit to what we can accomplish. God's blessings all! |

Hi Kolin! Welcome to MyChurch! I love to meet 16-year-olds who are passionate about spiritual matters! I'm sure you are right that Jeremiah Wright's liberation theology was one of the many concerns of those who didn't vote for Obama. I would also agree that there are many who follow Obama simply because of his skin color, but I would add that there were likely even more who followed his opponent simply because of his skin color. Despite who voted for whom though, the issue now is what we will do with today, now that Obama has been elected our president. We can join in his call for a united America, or we can stand back and complain about the one that got away.
Pastor Tim (just after your post) has posted some interesting information on black theology. You might be interested in checking it out. I offer you a counter-challenge: that you listen regularly to the president himself, and see if your conclusions are different from what you may be hearing. May we all keep our minds open enough for God to mold us, just in case.
Pastor Tim, some media yes, some just the opposite. It really depends on what and whom we listen to, don't you think? Your point is well taken though that the American people are far too dependent on what we hear from outside (tv, radio, youtube, forwarded e-mails, pastors, etc.) for forming what become our own opinions. Too small a percentage actually listen to or read the original sources anymore, but opt for adopting the opinions of those around them. I commend you as an exception!
June, I appreciate your well constructed response! I too was impressed by Rick Warren's prayer this morning. You said "If we can keep that attitude toward one another then there is no limit to what we can accomplish." Amen, June, Amen! No political or theological divisions are necessary for humanitarian service toward our fellowman. |

| I have to agree with Joel. I did not vote for Obama either. I too am scared by a lot of his policies. I usually vote Republican but I have been disgusted by what many Republicans have done to this country and to the party. However, I will not vilify either man. I have become very disillusioned with our country's politics. If people disagree it comes down to name-calling. I see it on so many sites. I don't mind arguing my position but please don't call me names just because I may not agree with you. I will pray for President Obama just as I did for President Bush and President Clinton and the others before. I will also continue to pray for our country itself. We so desperately need to turn back to God. That is our only salvation. |

| Great blog and great discussion following it. History has a new chapter, the pages are blank and waiting to be written. History is made by us all. Obama leads this new chapter and we are all characters in this new plot. He called for a new era of responsibility for all citizens of our great Nation and citizens of the World. He understands that his position as leader of the USA comes with a great deal of responsibility, but is not only his or of the other elected leaders, is OURS as well. May God bless our leaders and may God offer wisdom to all of us to walk with them while writing this new chapter in our Nation's history book. |

Wonderful post, Kathy! Thought-provoking and insightful. I must admit that I had mixed feelings about our new President, but I was incredibly moved by both his speech and the ceremony yesterday. If we truly follow the teachings of Christ, I see no need for Christians to be left behind. It is only harboring hate and nurturing mistrust that prevents us from moving on toward becoming the united country we should strive to be. God bless our leaders! None of them are perfect, and fault can be found by some people, even those we consider the most righteous. Regardless of who won or lost, I will support this country and our leaders without reservation. I am keeping my heart and mind open, and praying that God will grant us all the wisdom to move forward and become the "UNITED" states of America again. Hugs, BK |

Hi Joel! I'm missed you! Interesting thoughts! I agree that Obama's best tactic will be to steer center. The extremes have gotten too extreme, to the point of fighting for agendas (no intelligence needed). It seems that much of America (myself included) is tired of the divisiveness that such a broken party system demands. When we look at our brothers and sisters as idiots or as sinners, solely because of their party affiliation, or when we use party agenda issues as litmus tests for identifying who is a real Christian, we prove that the political game has gone too far. This is a hard issue for many Chrsitians to see objectively, because they often are the extreme, and their belief that their political agenda is God-ordanied makes it difficult even for God Himself to speak to them. Thankfully more and more Christians are taking stands for Christ outside this polarized extreme. God is not a member of any political party, and he is far broader than any political agenda.
Hi Jamie! Welcome to MyChurch, and thank you for your well thought out comments! I did vote for Obama, but only after months of praying, listening, and studying, and I didn't make up my mind until a couple of weeks before the election. Nonetheless you and I are at the same place now. The election is over, and Obama is our new president. We can support him, or we can detach ourselves in bitterness. To choose to support does not imply worship, or even policy agreement. It means working together to make a better world for our children and grandchildren. It is a pretty messed up place right now! You sound like you agree! (But if not, I promise not to call you names!) I am glad to meet you and hope to hear more from you!
Very well said, Caleb!! Wow! He may need you on his P.R. team! |

I just had a (brain teaser)...here goes. The Word of God tells us to pray for everything. The Word of God tells us the fervent prayers of the righteous avails much. The Word of God tells us that whatsoever we ask for (not doubting) we shall receive. The Word of God tells us without faith it is impossible to please Him. The Word of God tells us when two agree in praying about anything it shall be given. The Word of God tells us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Scripture referrences found in the new testament.
Where are the prayers? Do we put our faith in God or mankind?
A disciple of Jesus Christ will do as Jesus commands by putting God first (love God with all our heart, mind and soul), and then loving our neighbor as we love ourselves. On these two commands hang all the laws and prophets. This is the order of the New Testament and the will of Jesus Christ. Anything else, will bring about strife and confusion, pride and arrogance..
If we really want to see a turn around in this country, we will do as Jesus commands before it too late.
Father, I pray that You watch over Your Word to perform it to completion, in the name of my Precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Amen.
I have posted prayers for the President and his family on my page. I have also posted various prayers. If anyone is interested, all you need do is go read them and say Amen.
Sister Kathy, thank you for allowing me to speak my mind. Blessing go out to you my friend.
With loving thoughts Sister Marcia |

| Indeed a wonderful achievement and a beautiful sentiment. However, for all of us to unite is not necessarily a christian concept. Jesus came to bring a sword. There are some things that we just can not compromise. However, no sense raining on the parade! Ho-ray for America! Hooray for our new president! It is God who raises up kings and kingdoms so we trust in God ultimately and we pray for our president and we honor and esteem him and give honor to whom honor is due. I can only hope that things will get better for all Americans. |

Brenda Kay, beautifully said!! Amen!
Marcia, good word! Of course prayer is of utmost importance, and hopefully we are not just saying "I'm praying for the president," but we are intimately and privately lifting him before God. Public prayers can be very meaningful, as were some during the inauguration events, but prayer at its very essence is intimate and personal. Did you see the link Barb posted above? That is the best prayer site for the nation that I've ever seen. I think you'll love it!
Hello my friend Todd! Thank you for bringing your sword to the party! :) The distinction you make is one I have tried to iterate here, but it merits a few more tries! The unity I write about here is not uniformity. It is not agreement of policy, or agreement of issues. It is not a compromise of God-given values and principles. Rather, despite all our differences in viewpoints, it is a real mutual respect for each other and each other's rights to differ from us. It is loving our brothers and sisters no matter what they believe or what their background. I don't think Obama is calling the nation to think as he thinks, but rather to allow all other persons to think as they choose, without our hatred or condescension. A friend in my church likes to jokingly say "You have a right to agree with me, or you have a right to be wrong." Either way, unity demands our equal respect. |

PT, Billo the Clown (LOL) should be the last to talk about bias. Nonetheless, the point is well taken. Humans are biased. Pure objectivity is an illusion. We could talk, however, about relative objectivity, which was not much present on those 24/7 "news" networks such as Fox, MSNBC, CNN, others. The best one could do is to try watch different points of view and discern to the best of our abilities what is completely biased and what has some measure of objectivity. I for one, prefer the news reported straight and not filtered and commented to death by the so-called news experts such as O'Reilley, Oberman, Wolf, et al. And as with anything else, not just the news, we should always be on guard and have the right presence of mind not to be biased by anyone to the point that we stop thinking on our own. Little trivia question: Who was the first person(s) to bias (or form) your perception of the world? My answer: My parents. God Bless them. |

| Good commentary, Caleb and PT. Bias is indeed ingrained in the human experience, and networks are no exception. We can count on Fox News to give us one side of the story and NPR the other, both sides true, but neither side complete on its own. |

| What an excellent commentary, Kathy.
You've given me much food for thought. I haven't established a personal opinion yet about our new President; however, Jesus told Pilate he wouldn't be in his position of leadership if God had not allowed it. That tells me the same can be said about Pres. Obama. Therefore, it is my responsibility to support him in prayer as he does his best to lead my country.
One thing that Christians in America today do not seem to understand is the role government is to play as assigned in God's Kingdom. It is NOT to provide social welfare and dictate morality. That's the church's responsibility.
No. The government is to enforce laws and to ... well, govern! This is true separation of church and state. Then, together, they create an environment where people can grow and thrive.
If more Christians would live generous lives the way God teaches us to there would be no need for social security or welfare programs. Walking in love as Christ taught us to would take so much pressure off our government. Some day ...
I must address the unity question. This is one of my personal passions because the church is so divided it grieves me.
Paul in every letter calls the church to be united. And the first example of being united and the power it unleashes on earth is given in Acts when the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles and the 140 who were praying and meeting together until they were united!
After that 3,000 people were led into the family. Peter was able to preach and every person understood what he was saying.
I think I'll blog more about this on my own page so I'll close with ...
Kathy ... thanks again for a well-managed, kind and gracious attitude throughout your comments and blog. It is clear you love your neighbor. Thank you for setting such an excellent example. |

Jude (from the Lockman’s Foundation Amplified Bible) “20 But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit; 21 guard {and} keep yourselves in the love of God; expect {and} patiently wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)-- [Who will bring you] unto life eternal. 22 and on some have mercy and compassion who waver {and} doubt. 23 [Strive to] save others, snatching [them] out of [the] fire; on others have pity [but] with fear, loathing even the garment spotted by the flesh {and} polluted by their sensuality." True Christians should be peculiar people of righteousness, peacefulness, and joyfulness. Jesus Other Yourself My understanding of Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all my heart, and lean not on my own understanding or past experiences; in all my ways acknowledge Him (be thankful to/for God), and He (via the Holy Spirit) shall direct my thinking and doing. Early in the Presidential campaign, I had hoped that Obama would prevent the Clintons from being rhe residents in the White House again, but then I read and heard more about Obama. He is not a Christian just because he says he is. Check what he spiritually believes in the following location of mine. He is a believer of socialism and communism, and has been educated and trained for such. The Illuminati, Builderburgers, Council of Foreign Relations, and the Club of Rom wanted him to win because their politicians could manipulate him much easier than Hillary and McCain (whom I did not want to vote for either). USA is in the worse danger than it has ever been in. More info about that is in the next folder below. I have told hundreds to do frequent intercessory praying for the political and spiritual leaders, and in response to tragedies. I rebuke anyone who says untruths about Obama or condemns him or any other leader.
