| Can that be said with fewer words? |
|
| |
Recently I read some blogs in my archive that are a couple of years old, and thought they seemed less wordy than my more recent writings. I wondered if it's possible I have more to say now than I did back then? Or could it be that I'm just putting less thought into "word economy" these days? Or maybe the difference was only imagined! lol
But it did make me question, do people generally prefer short blogs to longer ones? And if so, how strong is that preference? (Enough to decide whether or not to read based on length??) Personally I prefer shorter blogs. They're simply easier to read! But if the ones I write are getting more wordy, it would be doubly unfortunate: not only would that leave less time to write (longer blogs = fewer blogs), but also, how can I be an advocate for shorter blogs, if the ones I'm writing are getting longer?
My early impressions of the blogging world were that shorter is generally better. The folks who seemed to know what they were doing kept it short, and used links generously in place of typing a lot of descriptions and background. After all, these were “web log” entries, not magazine articles or research papers. (Granted, people can use their blogs for whatever they want, there's really no right or wrong way to do it.)
(4th and final paragraph) Since discovering blogs and blogging, I've grown to love reading them. I most appreciate clearly expressed bite-sized thoughts captured in well-written blogs. My usage statistics on this site give me away as a blog reading junkie too! I see that I've "starred" over 6,500 blogs in two years...yikes that's a lot of reading! If there's one thing I would like to add, it's that if I am in any way qualified to give blog writing advice, it would be because of all the reading I've done, rather than the writing. In fact, statistically it's possible to say I'm about 30 times the reader than I am a writer, lol!
(ok, I lied—5th paragraph) Although admittedly my purpose in blogging is more for the author's benefit (documenting my journey of faith) than for the reader's, I certainly do recognize and respect my readers' time. (I'm really quite honored that anyone would read this besides me!) So as life gets more crowded and hectic (for both of us!), I will continue to try to keep it short and disciplined, both out of consideration for others, and simply by necessity!
Oops, there I go again. Look how long this post got……sorry!!!

Mike:
I think people are busy(at work, etc.) and tend to go for shorter blogs, however if the essence of what you are trying to express cannot be captured in two or three short paragraphs, then by all means blog until you are satisfied that His Word has been expressed as the Spirit lays it upon you.
You do get carried away sometimes, LOL but I love every word.......

Thanks Keith! When people write for an audience of One, "proper conventions" kinda go out the door. And that's fine if that's your purpose. I'm interested in hearing other perspectives....thanks for yours! |

I guess it depends upon whether you're trying to actually communicate or not. If you're just looking for entertainment then shorter is better; if you're really trying to have relationships through communication then "Craig" must be translated into "Mike" and "Mike" into "Craig" and that takes words. Personally, I would like to understand why people believe what the do and in general that takes more words because it requires context. Also, I actually believe that what I share isn't just "Craig"; and if a given concept or idea is to be shared and understood then more is better. But the blogs "I" read are the ones that the Lord speaks to me through and when he's doing that I'm interesting in hopefully having more than a superficial relationship with the person he is doing that through. But I've found that he also speaks through whomever he chooses whenever he chooses. Bottom line: it all comes back to what's in our heart. Why are we here? To be entertained? To entertain? To be right or to do right? To edify and be edified? Because we're interested in God's people and want to allow the Lord to bless people through us? Or any number of other agendas...but there is always an agenda. :-) To discern it is generally a matter of time...and words. Best regards, Craig |

| I wouldn't say less thought is put into blogs when people write them, but how effectively it is put across by the people who write them. And if it does take a long blog to get the message across, so be it. Sometimes less words means more impact. As the apostle Paul once wrote: I'd rather say 5 words that make sense - than 10,000 that don't make sense. I think the apostle Paul had a good point. Its as if to say "stop faffing about and just say it!" Oops! Have I just said it? LOL!!! |

Excellent thoughts Craig, just EXCELLENT!! And look at all those words you used! (lol) Seriously, I appreciate your input, you've changed my perspective! I do slightly disagree on just one point Craig, but it's minor. You said "If you're just looking for entertainment then shorter is better". To me, real communication involves knowing what not to say just as much as knowing what to say. Discipline and discernment, my friend! Have you ever known someone who just talked your ears off, and you had to be rude just to break free? This rarely occurs in the blogosphere (it can though!), but I use it to make the point. Stevie, as someone who does write longer blogs usually, I really value your thoughts. And when I have the time and get a chance, I really enjoy your blogs. You go deep, brother! As someone with a very focused mind, I appreciate that. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, and for saying essentially what I was trying to say in the above paragraph to Craig. (You may have said it better too!) |

| Thanks Panda, that's a very important aspect. So are you saying that as long as the Word is clearly written and expounded, you'll read the blog? Length is irrelevant to you? (just curious) Are there any other criteria? |

| ps.... I admit, given my hectic lifestyle at the present time, blog length is a rather important factor to me. Maybe one day it won't be, but for now it is. | Short blogs seems to be a preferred way. At times though, some topics require more detailing and may go longer and using hyperlinks seems to help. Other times, people write long blogs just to hear themselves "talking" without realising that most people will tune them out. Many people here blog to preach and as we all know a sermon is normally a good 20 minutes to half an hour and I rather listen to my pastor preach to me than read a sermon here. I enjoy reading blogs here that are short, informative, and not preachy. Honestly, I have read many of your blogs and for the most part they seems to be short, concise, and of good value. And any blogs that have gone for the extra line or two have not really gone that long. Keep blogging my friend. |

Hi! Mike on my bad days I do tend to go with the shorter blogs, if I can even read that day, but a good blog whether short or long is good reading... if it gets to technical, I tend to leave, because fibro fog doesn't allow me to comprehend that... lol but I love what people think and what they are going through, I want to be a part whether to pray and encourage, and to just be supportive to my family and friend on MYCHURCH... I have grown so much, through, my friends on here. You and my other friends have blessed me so much... You and (MC) friends are such wonderful friends, and people in every way... I have grown through you, brother Todd, MarJay, Joe, Carrie, Angela, Terry, oh I can't name them all... I say write, if it is long, will get around to read it. If is short we will gladly read it... but the blog has to be true to the writer, for us to know where they are, and what they need, and to listen to what they want us to know or learn... That is the important thing... Thank you Mike for your blogs.
God bless you, and your family... Love you my brother. |

Yay! The other point of view! Thanks Caleb, I tend to agree...particularly w/this: " I rather listen to my pastor preach to me than read a sermon here." This isn't to say that all long posts read like sermons, or that I refuse to read longer posts..(I have read quite a few, but daunting length does sometimes turn me away). Good to hear from you! And Marilyn - interesting point when you said "if it gets to technical, I tend to leave". That's why I prefer a blog with heart! The world is full of commentaries and reference books, however there is only ONE you!! Yes, "the blog has to be true to the writer" (as you so well said). You understand the heart behind the blog well, sister! |

Some of us just take a while to "get there" LOL Which is what I find in mine. I'm one that likes to get the reader in a frame of mind and then "hit them" with the point. Hummmm never really thought about that. I have a blog brewing. Still in the mental process though.
We all see things differently. I like that -by reading- we can stand and take in their "view" for a moment. |

The length of the blog isn't relevant to me. If I am going to read a blog at all, I will read it whether it is short or long. My main purpose in doing so is to learn what someone has to share about their own life's journey, interests, prayer requests, stories about their walk with God, things that blessed them, challenged them, what they are doing now...the list goes on...I am an avid blog reader too! I also like to understand the context in which one is writing and don't mind if people are sharing what other people wrote or said...it often points me to new things. The only blogs I can say I don't really have time for are those that are politician bashing, blogs where the author quotes the MC scripture of the day and add nothing to it but want you to comment on it and blogs that have many thoughts put together in one long paragraph because I find it just too hard to read. The longer I've been on MC, I try to seek out blogs that are not widely read or are written by people that aren't as widely known. I do this as an encouragement to wider participation in the MC family. I prefer reading blogs that are well formatted in terms of spacing, larger font bc they are easier to read, different colours and pictures for visual interest... but these are not criteria that are "cast in stone". |

| Less isn't always necessarily more, especially when it comes to blogging. Due to time constraints I do prefer shorter blogs, but sometimes it's hard to express my most heartfelt feelings in just a single paragraph or two. I'd have to agree with some of the other people who commented - "as the Spirit leads" is best I guess.:) |

Mr. Mike,
In comparison with other blogs on here...ALL of yours are pretty short, sweet, and to the point! Your thoughts are clearly expressed and the reader isn't left guessing what you were thinking! Now THAT'S a good blog! I do like shorter blogs, but I also enjoy the longer ones too! (Since I am a rambler, I fit into that catagory better) Mr. Mike...I think your blogs are AWESOME! And it's okay to go on bit more than you are used to! :) |

I don't mind if they are miles long but I do like to see the paragraphs broken up a bit. You do that, Mike. It is just easier to read if they have a break with changing thoughts. Perhaps four to five lines so you have a place to pause. I read some blogs out loud so that I can process them better. I speak them so I hear it and think it at the same time. I never skip reading all the comments if I like the blog. Yours are keepers. love you! |

The more I write the more I say Unless the words get in the way
Too many words too little thought Makes what I write all for nought
But when the Spirit takes control The message written is always whole
Fitting perfectly a need or desire Of one who is going thru the fire
It's less about length and more about heart Less about talent and if the tears start
Sometimes for the multitude sometimes for one I only stop writing when the Spirit is done
Beyond the words and into the heart Searching for truth in the inner part
Many words can be a way to hide Of what is really going on inside
Too little words can allow only a peek When the whole picture is what we seek
Words can be tools that we use to build When to the Master Carpenter we yeild
Or they can be weapons that kill and destroy When I am the boss and words I employ
Let the words that I speak and the words that I write Be acceptable, O Lord, in thy sight
Sometimes when I write I am like that little boy in the Family Circus cartoon that wanders all over the neighborhood getting from one place to the other when I could simply have gotten "straight to the point". But what fun is in that, lol. Such is the heart of a child. Other times much is said in few words. When a small child is hurt they go running straight to the one who they trust in crisis.
Mychurch is a true "mega-church" with countless sub-groups. Most individuals will be drawn to a small core group they interact with by writing or reading by the Lord's design. Inside your group the number of words is usually not a big deal. What is said is.
Jesus would have been a very popular blogger. He spoke so much truth with so few words. He was easy to understand.
Paul, on the other hand, would have probably had few reads. His blogs would tend to be lengthy and "preachy".
David would share his feelings and they could range from very low to very high. But David had a way of always bringing it around to trusting the Lord in whatever he was going thru.
Jacob, in his early writing, would always have advice and strategy to acheive. After he changed his nic to Israel, his writing would have been about trusting GOD and true riches.
Well, Mike, could I say more? Of course.
Could I have said what I said with fewer words? Definitely.
But this is how my mind works, what my heart feels, and how I write. I know I am not a great writer. I know my writing is flawed in the eyes of those who put much emphasis in technique (and that is not even the right word). But I have a heavenly Father, a heart of gratitude, and I care deeply for our brothers and sisters.
I am a just a cup. When someone is thirsty the Spirit fills me and the thirsty drink. It is not for me to measure how much they need or desire. I am simply a cup.
.....peace..... |

Sometimes when I write I am like that little boy in the Family Circus cartoon that wanders all over the neighborhood getting from one place to the other when I could simply have gotten "straight to the point". But what fun is in that, lol. Such is the heart of a child. I did a dance when I read that apureheart because I have said that I am guilty of that very thing and some folks remember him ...think it is Billy.... going through the tire swing, over the picnic table, pet the dog, wave to the mailman, a skip over the picnic table again and find a new route to get to the goal. I have done that my whole life. I clean house that way. Once I was knee deep in rearranging my living room, had laundry going, dishwasher, soaking fine washables in a sink, stereo playing and found some overdue books...so stopped and drove them to the library. I didn't think a thing about itbut my late husband came home and was none too happy. I seriously didn't think it was a big deal but got a lecture of the pattern I should clean, top to bottom then next room, not leaving itt till done. God made armadillos and wild stallion horses...calla lillies and thorny cactus...so thinking variety in style is way ok. Mike(nlaura) you once again got us all thinking. That seems to be your assignment for which we love you. peace/out juanita |

Gordon (apureheart)...magnificent words, even if many. I definitely read your heart this morning.....and can't thank you enough for it! Juanita...isn't it intriguing fascinating enjoyable and enlightening to think together!?!? =) .. I was afraid some might be offended that I would even suggest length as a criteria for "judging" blogs, after all, they are supposed to come from the heart, or the Spirit, and how dare we try to stifle either? (Well, they don't all, and that's the truth.) But there is so much grace around here...that even if I suggested it (well, I did), I would be quickly forgiven. :) Basically to summarize thus far, to cut off all writings at a certain length is a bad idea! But short blogs do encourage at least some to read. Thus far, I believe the Spirit has had a lot to do with most of my writings, so length hasn't been much of an issue. As long as I continue to submit my thoughts to the Lord, length should continue to be a non-issue. At least, that's where I'm at on this after talking with all of you! =) |

| I generally like shorter blogs...however, there are times when a subject needs more length to properly cover it, and at those times, I will try to read it...if it does not keep my interest, then I probably won't finish the longer ones. I try to read as many as I can, so shorter is better. And when writing, I try to keep it short. You can always add a "part 2" if necessary and write it a different day. lol |

Shorter is always better. Winston Churchhill was supposed to have once said, after a long speech, that he was sorry that his speech was so long, had he had more time to prepare, it would have been shorter. I am a newspaper editor. I am always trying to make things shorter. Especially in modern culture where we are so visually oriented and have time constraints. In newspapers, study after study has shown, that very few people read beyond about five inches on any story. If you are not Hemingway, you probably cant make it interestng enough for people to go on anyway. It does take more effort to write shorter, but it communicates so much better. My suggestion would be to write your post and let it set a day before editing it and posting it. Better yet, get someone else to edit it before you post it. Just to make it shorter and more effective. |

James, I KNEW a newspaperman would come along and weigh in! (Well, maybe not, but newspaper articles were the EXACT example I had in mind all along for limiting a piece.) Needless to say, or maybe I really do need to say it...I try hard not to write excessively long blogs. (Not for fun, let's define "excessively".) And I actually do frequently let blogs sit a day after writing them, rather than write n post immediately. We are largely on the same page, newspaperman! (Although I am also inclined to agree w/the perspective of following the Spirit of God, though I doubt the Spirit would lead me to write poorly, would he???) lol Deb, we continue to identify much w/one another. I identify so much w/your post, I could have written it myself! Sometimes long posts make my eyes hurt, usually when I'm doing my late night blog reading. But when the Spirit's really talkin to me through a post, or someone's heart is really comin through clearly, it's much easier to read lengthy blogs. I have yet to write a single part 2... of course, that could mean a variety of things, lol. |

| Have you ever tried to read a wordy advertisement as you drive by? It can be frustrating and is a downright waste of time. McDonald's is a good example of visual economy and the old advertising saying that less is more. I think the same is true of blogs. Nuff said. LOL. |

hey, I will be just as honest as I can...I do skip by the lengthy blog..my mind cant comprehend too many words and thoughts at one time...but I do keep a little notebook by my computer and jot down the blogs name or bloggers name, so that when my mind has calmed I can come back to it...I see no point in struggling through just for the point of reading it...I want to actually digest what the blogger is saying, and sometimes that means I have to come back...
whew I got wordy there..LOLOL
in any case, I love all the blogs and can usually get something out of each....albeit a laugh, or conviction, or just food for thought... |

Hi Carrie Ann! Yes, the majority seems to be saying, it depends. I prefer word economy, as I said in the blog, but it's possible to write a long blog and still be economical (efficient) with your words....say, if you shorten a 20-pg blog into 4! (Goodness though, 4 pgs is a lot to read in one sitting!)
Heather, there have been quite a few times over the last couple years that I've opened a blog, only to see the long length, and possibly lack of formatting or other "cosmetic" issue, and prompty leave. Sometimes the Lord leads me to persevere, but humans do have physical limitations. So we don't need to be sheepish in admitting that there are some blogs we just can't handle. I've been there too. SO... If I have a serious point to make, I try to get right down to it!! Thanks for sharing your viewpoint!
Grant....in general, I agree. See also the newspaperman's (James Jordan's) comment! |
