8:23 And when he got into the boat, his disciples followed him. 8:24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 8:25 And they went and woke him, saying, "Save, Lord; we are perishing." 8:26 And he said to them, "Why are you afraid, O men of little faith?" Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
I've read this Bible passage many times but I ran across it the other day and it felt different to me. For the first time, I tried to really imagine this situation.
You've got seasoned fishermen on a boat in a storm. Now, this must not have been just a casual summer storm that blows up occasionally, or else these men ,who have spent a lifetime on the water, would not have been so alarmed. This must have been a great storm that would surely have struck fear in all of us (or me, anyway).
When they wake Jesus, he doesn't say, "Oo, yeah - this is a bad storm - thanks for waking me up - I need to stop this right away or we're gonna drown." - instead he rebukes them. Like, why are you bothering me with this? Why don't you know and believe (oh, ye of little faith) that my mere presence in this boat keeps us all safe? They would have ridden out the storm and been fine simply because they had Jesus with them.
At that moment, I realized that the boat in the storm is me in the world! When the winds of life start whipping up and the boat starts rocking, I'm not in it alone. No storm can ever overtake me because JESUS IS IN MY BOAT! |

Kristie, This is wonderful! Isn't it awesome when He hits you in the head with something like this (He is in the boat). I know for me, I dread the storms of life, until I remember, that I get to ride the waves with the Lord! Seems to all be worth it! Blessings, Angie |

WOW!!!! This brings back a message that Bro. Don brought to his sheep a few years back! He talked about how the things in life rage around us but as you said, it CANNOT take us over! He kept saying, "It's just the wind" all through the sermon! I have reflected back on that message many times since when I feel like I just can't take anymore or things are just completely out of control!!! "IT'S JUST THE WIND" How wonderful that we as God's children always have the protection of being under His wings! God's child! WHAT A LEGACY!!!! |

OOOOH it it so good that Jesus is in this boat. After hearing some not so good news from my sister about my defiant nephew, I needed that simple Knock on the head. Its just wind and God can calm it all. Blessings to you sister, Honoray/Onenine |

| Honoray, is it a coincidence that I have a defiant son who rocks my boat all the time? Personally, this devotion said to me that Jesus is in the boat with me AND my son and we will survive this storm. I will pray for your nephew. Thanks for the star! |

| Great insight on the storm being above and beyond the normal. When our calm waters turn into a small storm, we often look for help everywhere EXCEPT Jesus. As a "last resort" we in essense say," well this is a biggie and it's getting worse so I'd better call on Him". On another note, I don't think the disciples were wrong in calling on Him, just wrong in seeing Him sleeping and thinking He didn't care or know what they were going through. He always knows and cares (and calms the storms within!)!!! Thanks for the post! |

| Shannon, I wonder how many times God has brought about a situation in order to teach me something - and I miss it! |

Reminds me of that song...sometimes He calms the storm and other times, He calms His child... |
