Last weekend was a fun weekend for my wife and me. We celebrated our first anniversary. To celebrate, we went and stayed in a hotel on Kansas City's Country Club Plaza. We live just south of there about 20 minutes or so, but it was just far enough to feel like we were somewhere else, like a vacation. While we were out walking and shopping, etc., it seemed like everywhere we went, the Live Earth festival was on TV.
Now don't get me wrong here, because I truly believe in doing whatever we can to preserve and protect our earth, that's not what this is about; however, I just don't see how our world can continue to overlook things such as a poverty and hunger and have big, world-wide fundraisers for GLOBAL WARMING. It doesn't make sense to me that we would spend that much time and effort on something that we are more or less trying to prevent/slow, when we don't completely know whether or not it is even real, or as big of an issue as it has been made out to be by certain former Vice Presidents and political documentaries. I don't really know all of the science behind this global warming issue, but what I do know is that there are millions who do not have enough food to eat or even access to clean water, and it seems to me that we should be putting our world-wide efforts together in attempt to end global poverty, something that can be helped right now, and that we would see immediate results from. Not to mention all of the other unneccesary luxuries that so many of us have (myself included here, so this is for me just as much as anyone else), like iPods and iPhones and expensive TVs, etc. Trust me, I'm feeling plenty of conviction, and I'm not saying that we can't have these nice things, but what I am saying is that I think I need to take this all into consideration when I have all of this nice stuff and I can't even find it in myself to allow the donation organization that I give to to increase my giving $4.00 a month so they can better meet the needs of my sponsored child!
I guess I hear Jesus saying through all of this, whatever you did for the lowest of people...you know that drill. Anyway, please don't hear this as me yelling at the world for raising money to try and protect the planet that our children will be living on long after we are gone. I think it was a very well-done event. It just raised a few questions in my head, and for that, I am very thankful.
