Hearing the Voice of God
Only among the religious community will you hear someone say, “God told me this or that…” I used to be bothered by such expressions whenever I heard it because for one, many religious folk sling the expression around so loosely. Second, the persons that usually speak this way seem to be saying that they have a connection with God that others do not have. Sadly however, most of them that I have seen were not genuine. They were phonies.
Also there are many so-called Ministries that are making billions of dollars packaging and selling instructional books and tapes on the hopes and dreams of anxious members of their congregations on the idea of being able to hear God speak to them directly.
Now I am not saying that God can not or will not speak to us directly. This I do know, God can do anything He wants; for with God all things are possible. I guess what I am getting at is if we are hearing directly the audible voice of God, how do we know for sure it God that is speaking?
I am a bit concerned about this because I am sure you too have heard and or read news articles of men and women who have committed suicide or have murdered members of their families and their reason was that God told them to do it. If God does speak, how can we know for sure it's Him? Can we know for sure…?

Hey JR, I must say that I hear the voice of God every now and then. Not actually an audible voice though, which is what I think you meant. It's more like I feel His presence when I meditate on scripture, during morning quiet times when all is quiet and peaceful. This is very powerful!
He never says outrageous things to me, it's typically just through scripture. Probably most of the same things He's told believers all through church history, except specific to my life. And I certainly don't claim to have a tighter connection with God than any other Christian, hey we all the same Holy Spirit indwelling us, right? Thanks for a very interesting blog! ~mike |

I have always said that our God is a God of confirmation. When I only hear something one time, I usually say "that must not have been the Lord." But when I hear things over and over again, it probably is Him. But only time can really tell. I believe God speaks through His Word, through other believers and through prayer. But we can also get our signals crossed and hear the wrong "voices." So we must be cautious! His voice will always line up with His Word. If it doesn't, it ain't Him!!
Great post! |

Hey Guys, Check and balances are very important, huh?. Using the word of God to check the Voice that we may be hearing is very good point. That tell me that we really need to know God's Word so that we can know His voice, huh? You both brought out some really good points. That remines me what Jesus said in John 10:1-5:
10:1 "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber; 10:2 but he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 10:3 To him the gatekeeper opens; the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 10:4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 10:5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." Awesome!! We sure can find great security in these word of our Lord.

| I think we will always know it is God if He calls us to Love Him more and to Love others more.
that's the test I say.
If "God" asks me to do something that will please me but that might hurt others then it is definitly not God. If God asks me to sacrifice myself for others, to "die to self," to love him more deeply, to serve...then yep. Pretty sure its Him.
Plus you can always ask... "is this You?" |

Knowing the character of God plays an important role in knowing his voice. You have said a mouthful. But we still have to be very careful. Remember the Temptations of Christ; how Satan tried to get our Lord to do things that He should not. It should be noted that Satan was manipulating the word of God in order to make his point of view appear correct. And as Panchita had brought out some good points, still care must be careful not to base the proof of the word of God or proof for voice of God on our feelings. That could be dangerous. Mike, I like what you said earlier that we have the Holy Spirit as our Guide. Hasta el apóstol Pablo nos avisó diciendo el siguiente: 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
11:13 For such [are] false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 11:15 Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Gracias a todos. JR |
