| Role Modes Can Fall Off Their Pedestals Too! |
|
| |
Unfortunately, most of the people that kids look up to, the ones they want to "be just like", are role models who are more susceptible to sin, because of their fame or status.
Look what happened to Michael Phelps. I was so disappointed in his behavior. After all the hype of his gold medals at the Olympics, and his swimming excellence, the media painting him as the All American Guy. He seemed too good to be true, and guess what? He was. Someone taking a picture catching him in a sin, now has consequences that will probably ruin his hopes for success and fame. People will remember the gold medals, but Michael Phelps is tarnished now. We will remember what he did wrong, and that will take away from the glory he achieved. Did we make him into something we shouldn't have? Did we make him into a god of the swimming athlete world?
There have been others...some famous, some not. Like the preacher that gets caught stealing from the church, or the quiet, hard working dad who has an affair, or the mom that abuses her children, or the police officer that commits murder, the church elder who looks at porn, the teacher that is a sexual predator, the government official who drinks too much...people that should be good role models end up not being someone we could look up to, but someone who is fallible, imperfect, a sinner. I get disappointed in these people, and feel like screaming at them...Don't you know people look up to you? Can't you clean up your act?
But then I realize that no one on this earth can be a role model that will never fail in his leading. We should at least be able to depend on our church leaders to do the right things, but we have seen that fail time and again. The only One we can truly count on to be a role model that never fails is Jesus.
4:9 The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance. 4:10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe. Man will always get knocked off that pedestal, no matter how popular he seems to be. Even those who truly strive to be like Jesus. We will all fall. We shouldn't look to man to be our guide and our hope. Only Jesus can fill those shoes. |

| The apostle Paul said to imitate him, even as he imitated Christ; but only because of that. You are so right about this. Even leaders and pastors in our churches; they are failible. There's a Barlow Girl song your blog made me think of. It's called "Pedestal". Good one to add to this blog if you could find it. I'm not much good at finding that stuff. |

| Your post exhibits grace in action. Our biblical heroes all failed too. Moses killed a man, David committed adultery, Paul and Peter had personal issues between them, and so on. We all fail! And so when I look at Phelps, or Clinton, or Bush, all any of us can say is God forgive them as he forgave us. |

| I did admire that he didn't claim to be a victim but instead he said it was just that he was punished and he wouldn't do it again then went back to what he needed to do, practice swimming. |

Rebekah Byrne, and Wolf Spirit Child, thank you for your comments...
Mike, thank you, and you are right, young kids need someone to look up to. We need to teach them that the best example is Jesus. It is never easy to follow Him, but especially with peer pressure.
Lara, since I am on dial up, songs don't work so well for me. I end up waiting an eternity for them to load, so hopefully someone can help me know whether your link works or not. I will try to find the words to the song at least and post them.
Grant, Amen to that!
higherground, Yes, I do admire him for facing what he did and taking the punishment, and admitting to the mistake. Let's just hope that he uses it to learn from and doesn't do it again.

As Lara suggested, this song is appropriate...
Barlow Girl Pedestal Lyrics: You're the coolest person That I have ever seen So perfect with your pretty face On the TV screen
You're a god I know it How you stand above them all You are my perfect person Man I'd hate to see you fall
I want someone to believe in Yeah well don't we all? 'Cause in this life of imperfection need someone who won't fall You got it, you got it, you got it all
Got a Magazine today That was full of you Shocked to read the words they said Tell me they're not true
Add you to my fallen list One more has hit the ground The fault was mine Held you too high You're only what was down
I can't deny this need inside I have to find the perfect one But I wonder if behind my need There might be a reason?
Is my life just one big searching For the one I can adore? It never works And I'm just left here wanting more
Could it be this hunger's there To drive me to the One Who's worthy of all worship Would my searching then be done? Lyrics: Pedestal, Barlow Girl [end] |

| I like David (in the bible), a role model of....failure! AND YET...he was a man after God's heart! Failure is a nice little reminder, NONE of us is worthy of glory by ourselves, we ALL desperately need a Savior!!! Great blog Deb! |

Lara, I have heard them and have a couple of their cd's. I am a fan...
Mike, Thank you Mike, and I like David as well. He messed up so much, and yet, like you said, he was a man after God's own heart. We all mess up, but we can all start over with God. |

| It's true that the only one you can truly look to is Christ. He is the only true and perfect one. There are many examples in the Bible where people failed, repented and were completely transformed that's quite a testimony too. That helps me when I blow it big time. All of us have someone who looks up to us & there are times we make huge mistakes,it's just not on the front page of our local paper or on CNN. |

| racunpoodle, That is so true! We all make mistakes, and our children should learn that as well, but we need to be careful how we correct those mistakes, so that we are a good example of what to do when we do something wrong. Thanks for your comment! |

[star!] | 100% true. I like Barlow Girl, too. Superchick's another good band -- started out as a "girl" band, now they're mixed. |

| Thank you for commenting Jen...I am a music lover, so it is a big part of my life. I can't imagine not having it, and all I listen to anymore is Christian music. |
