Oh man! It happened again! God brought a scripture in my life that is so relevant, if it wasn't randomly generated by the host of the website, I would have chosen it myself! Just yesterday, to older gentlemen from my community and congregation sat in my dining room. They are upset with the faction that is trying to split our church and is slandering me publicly. They insist that there is a limit to turning the other cheek and that it is time to think strategically like a military unit. After all, didn't God use the children of Israel to wage war against the Philistines? That's when I took the time to listen to them, to affirm their thought process but to also explain why I have been gentle and haven't responded in kind to these attacks. I simply quoted Romans 12:21 to them! But what does that look like, to overcome evil with good? Does it mean to gather as many good people on your side and gang up on evil people? Or does it mean to live your life in such a way that you are true to your ethic of love as a Christian and not allow those who attack and slander you to change who you are? For me, it all comes down to who I have to face in the mirror each day, and Who I will have to face on judgement day!
12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Reminds me of the approach the priest used in Les Miserables with Jean Valjean. And how did that go? Valjean embraced Christ, repented, and the course of his entire life turned around!
