| Why Hyssop |
|
| |
As I look back now, I see how God used my inquisitive nature to reveal His Love and mysterious presence hidden within less obvious places of His Word, waiting for me to find.
I already knew this section of scripture was one of the Old Testament 'Types' of Jesus Christ.
(I mean, the blood of a spotless lamb poured out to save one from death in the book of Exodus as a likeness to Christ's' death on the Cross to save us from eternal death.)
And so, I was reading about the spackling of the door-posts, in chapter 12 of Exodus. When I got to the place where it said to dip the Hyssop into the blood, I asked myself, 'why Hyssop?' To me, I could not see God telling them to just grab up some weeds to do this amazing thing with.
Why did it say Hyssop and not just a dried weed, or a bundle of stray, an old rag tied to the end of an olive branch, even.
And so, I searched. I looked up the original word, ezov, which describes a small plant often found near city walls, structures, partial shade, etc,.. nothing really jumped out at me.
Modern scholars have proposed that it is more likely for ezov to refer to the same herb as the cognate Arabic term azaf, meaning the Caper; the caper is a plant with long stems, which is not only native throughout the Mediterranean Basin, but was also traditionally considered in the Middle East to have had cleansing properties. This was interesting and seamed relative, but I wasn't satisfied.
However, weeks later I picked up an old book I had that describes the land, culture, language, plants and animals in great detail from the same period. I went to the index and found the word hyssop.
I turned to the pages and read: The Hyssop of today is quite different from the Hyssop from the period of the Old Testament. Historic and Archaeological evidence shows that at that time of history, this plant had to endure many prolonged periods of drought. To survive these droughts, it produced a bulb that would catch infrequent rains inside and hold the water until the plant needed to consume it.
When I read this, I was totally amazed. The more I thought about this, the more I would praise God.
You see, if you dipped this plant into the blood and spackled the door-post, you would actually put both water and blood over the door to your home and death would pass your house, in this event described in Exodus. And you know that Christ poured both water and blood out from His body at Calvary for our sins, so that Any man that trust in and rely upon Him shall have everlasting life.
John 19:34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came (flowed) out.
This blood spill is symbolic of, 'it is done, finished'. Jesus is the yoke destroying, curse removing Christ!
When He took His last breath, it was finished, complete, all sins, burdens, curses, iniquities, all bondage was destroyed of every kind.
Jesus is referred to by His blood and as the living water as well. Both blood and water came from from His side.
This pouring out of both washes us clean inside and out. This mixture poured forth after death in Christ when pierced, but it is His blood that gives us life, and life more abundantly. He says living water shall pour out from our bellies.
John 7:38 He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.
God is so amazing to me. Do you know Him today?
I love you. |

Hey Preston, great study here. I had read once about the reason virtue is so important that when the blood from the hymen when a virgin loses her virginity is a covenant with that man, a soul tie. I don't know but I do know that the bible says Exd 13:2 Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, [both] of man and of beast: it [is] mine. When a baby is born, the water breaks. Interesting that if all went properly, A woman loses her virginity in the sacredness of marriage (blood is spilled) and then a first born child is born (water is broken). I can't see that as a cooincidence. We love you too! :) juanita |

1 John 5:7-8; For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. Psalms 51:7; Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Just a couple of verses to confirm what you wrote. Very good study! |

Oh my goodness, I love you guys so much. My keyboard went out on HTC Pro just before I finished this blog, and so I had to tap out the final HTML stuf on the touch screen. I think you know I dont have a computer. Anyway, I took it to alltel and they gave me a new one. But here is what I am so happy about. I thought for a while that it would be many days before I got back to YOU... It was depressing.
Juanita, I heard that about the first time blood thing years ago. The pastor spoke of a BLOOD COVENANT between the two. Whether bound by certificate or not, you are bound by God, Right? Like the Blog I wrote here, you cant really make doctrine of it, but the Spirit acknowledges it,... You know it's true. You know what I mean? Well, I love your comments, and I thank God for my new phone, so I can stay connected with you. |

That's super awesome! My hubby digs in deep and God shows him revelations like that that are just like WOW. The herbal catalogue book I have for Young Living describes Hyssop saying it's "noted for its purifying properties." Yep, that would be what God does. Purifies us. |

Look up Lara! Jay quoted it earlier. [Ps 51:7] :-) Just like when Eve was taken from the side of Adam, so too when the last Adam died (was put to sleep) his wife was born...born of the water and the blood. And now his bride is being made ready to be presented to him at his return! Great blog Preston! Craig |

Thanks Craig and Lara, and yes Juanita, I started hear with just a Palm Pilot. I crunched all the sentences into one black and white paragraph when I posted my blogs. Then I gave my friend Lynne my password and she would make them easier to read. Recently, Christin, bought me this HTC Pro and its made things,.. more fun. Well, I love you guys. |

Preston, I love the blog. I didn't know about the old Hyssop, and how it contained the water. This is fascinating.
I love the way the comments flow together as well. I love your phone too. God does think of everything, doesn't He. And all these years.... He had it all planned out. hehe |
