Did God Let Me Down?

Life is filled with disappointments. When things don't go as we plan or turn out as we have hoped, it is simpler to feel like God has let us down. God never promises to take away our problems, but He does promise to be present during our hard times.

I have spoke to many people who hold resentment towards God for the deaths of loved ones, even I felt that way when my grandfather was called home when I was 15. I became angry at God for what I perceived as Him taking my grandfather from me. Sound familiar? After some time though I began to realize that I was only focusing on the negative instead I should be thanking God for giving me my grandfather in the first place.

Anyone who is a parent will know what is like to be blamed by your children. Usually when I am frustrated or disappointed with God, it is because I am frustrated with myself. Instead of running into God's mighty arms, I have in the past blamed Him for my problems. Again sound familiar? You and I will always face disappointment in this life, but God is always there to pick us up. He promises us His presence and His peace. Remember

5:5 and hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

Pat, this is real wisdom. And possibly the beginning of an excellent in-depth study on the question "does God treat mankind with fairness". Those who resent God certainly don't think so. Many biblical writers didn't think so at the time of their writing either. Did God let me down? Well, what were my expectations? Where did they come from? What exactly does God promise? hehe, as you can probably tell, this is a topic that has crossed my mind from time to time. :-)

Been there, done that, and I might do it again.  Why???  Because of the erroneous concept I sometimes have of God.  Yes He is all powerful and He can change everything bad that happens or it’s about to happen to me and to the world, but why would I want God to put me in a glass bubble where pain and tribulations can’t touch me?  I will never be the kind of daughter He wants me to be if I do, because it is through pain and tribulations that my faith grows and my patience becomes stronger.  

Romans 5:3-5 (NLT)   3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.  

Now… knowing this does not change the fact that many times I have blamed God for my trials by asking the famous question “Why God?”  But then, when I sit long enough to think of His goodness and His love, I run to Him in repentance.   - Lourdes
