| Wondering if I am ever a “lion” in God’s eyes |
|
| |
34:10 The lions may grow weak and hungry; But those who seek the LORD lack no good thing. In the above verse, could the psalmist be writing about real lions? I seriously doubt it! I believe he’s actually contrasting people who share certain characteristics of lions with those who diligently seek the Lord, placing their trust in Him.
Lions lay around much of the time, and can be fairly pleasant company when they aren’t hungry (ask Daniel). But when hungry, lookout! Their appetite becomes the one thing controlling them, and they rely completely on their own strength and resourcefulness to satisfy it.
Kind of like the numerous young children (14!) around our campsite this past weekend! (hehe) Whenever they were hungry, they roved around in packs looking to put food in their bellies. Sometimes their behavior was even “scary”! But we saw other appetites reigning in them as well, such as the appetites for amusement, fairness, “me first”, etc. Like the lions in the verse above though, their efforts to satisfy their various appetites often failed, and the results weren't pretty!
Kids can be pretty wise and sophisticated in their own eyes, and at the same time look pretty foolish to their parents. We grown-ups (as “children” of God) actually appear the same way in the eyes of our Father. (If that doesn’t humble us, I don’t know what will!) So as I witnessed lion-like behaviors in the kids over the weekend, I felt the Lord calling me to examine myself. Are there times when my appetites control me? Do I ever rely primarily on my own resources to provide for myself rather than seek the Lord first and rest in his provision? Have there been occasions where I've failed specifically because I didn't seek the Lord?
Aside: This passage provided for a great family devotion time after our camping trip. First, kids love verses with animals in them! And second, the camping trip provided us with a great contrast between “lions” and those with a peaceful trust in the Lord. Next time there’s a campfire with smores, we’ll see how much our kids learned!

Mike, as usual, you have so eloquently taken scripture and applied it to real life. You have been given a gift which allows you to put into words and share the thoughts that God reveals to you. Each and every blog you post speaks to me in some way.
Hey, speaking of lions, don't forget - satan is like a roaring lion. |

Mike, I think we are all lions at one time or another. Hopefully, the more mature we get, the less like lions we get. Not long ago the Lord laid it upon my heart that I needed to trust Him more...a lot more. I have made improvements, but still a long way to go.
Thanks for all you interesting blogs, comments and ongoing support! Hey...Joe G wrote about lions too! |

| Hooray, today is Lion Day!! |

I'd like to think I am a lion...but more like a lamb...a stinky, stupid sheep. I love the analogy and the idea for the camp-side devotion. |

| I love seeing how people apply scripture to there dayly life after all I think I'm supposed to be a doer of the word, not just a hearer. Unfortunately being single when I have a family devotional my dog kind of looks at me like I'm off my rocker. |

Thanks for your comments!! (and stars!) Kristie, I feel unworthy, thank you sis. (Love the penguin -- it is a baby penguin, right?)
Angie, in some ways I suppose we should strive to be lions - in the area of courage and fearlessness, given that God's strength is behind us. Though Jesus is the Lamb, and for the most part acted like one by being gentle, nurturing, etc.
Thanks Patrick! Always great to hear from you!! Jay, that's a real compliment coming from you. Diana, thank you...and I hope you're citing those "reprints". :-)
Dave, that's b/c you are off your rocker, no doubt about that! But I love ya and am continuing to pray for you. Pray for me too please! Often it's easier to write what God puts on my heart than to live it!!

Hey Mike! Good insights, as usual. :) I thought it was an interesting thought (and it reminded me of some things)....take a look here at Blue Letter Bible online (can also be accessed at www.blb.org) to see all the verses where "young lions" are mentioned. There are some very interesting ones, including the passage from Ezekiel 38 (a prophetic passage) that many believe is a reference to the peoples and nations which have been born out of England ("Tarshish" is thought to be an old name reference to England), which would of course include the "good ol' " United States. Hopefully all the verses will provide you with some very interesting and most edifying study time, especially in light of the commentary you provided on this verse. :) |
