4:8 Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins. Christ emphasized love among His disciples. He said that people would know we were his disciples by the love we showed to each other. Family should be the greatest example of love at work, but so often we are at each other's throats faster than we are our neighbors or friends. We seem to yell and hold grudges against each other quicker than those we are not related to. This also applies to marriage. Doesn't your spouse get on your nerves quicker than your best friend? This is not the way it is supposed to be. Jesus wants us to rise above this behavior. Remember when you were dating -- your significant other could do no wrong. Everything about them was cute and endearing. After marriage, those cute things became the very things that rub you the wrong way and you go off on. Peter is commending us to return to that "dating period" in our thoughts and actions. When you truly love the other person more than yourself, you will overlook those minor things and focus on what is important. That love does not mean that you overlook things that are truly wrong or dangerous. But how many of those things that get on your nerves qualify as that? Typically if it is dangerous you will react out of concern for the other person, not annoyance. Practice love that covers a multitude of sins. |
