Mark 12:29 Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." (Read Chapter)
Recent statistics are showing a decline in the number of followers of "God". (USA Today: Most Religious Groups in America have lost ground)
When we consider the days we live in today, and the epidemics that plague us, it doesn't leave much room for debate that those statistics expose some truth. Some people even say "I'm not religious, but I'm spiritual", ultimately meaning "I acknowledge God, but not enough to want to be around his people all the time" and nobody wants to say "I'm materialistic", the opposite of "Spiritual".
Jesus was answering a question, "which is the greatest commandment". He replied with Deuteronomy 6:4, and followed up with "Love thy neighbor as thy self"
Its been said the 1st half of the 10 commandments represent our vertical relationship, or our relationship with God, and the latter half of the commandments represent our relationship with man (Picture a cross). Society today likes to acknowledge God through new age teaching etc (vertical relationship)... yet they neglect the horizontal relationship with their neighbor, hence an economic crisis.
The book of I John 3:10 says "In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother. " (Read Chapter)
Loving God and loving our neighbor are knitted together. As a society, and closer to home a Christian society, we need to 1st check our relationship with God, chances are if our relationship with God is out of wack it may be the reason why our relationship with other people is out of wack (snapping at the spouse, kicking the person beyond the counter, flipping on the customer service rep on the phone) or pretending to be investing millions of dollars for your friends. When we love God we consider how our actions are going to affect those around us, its not me, me, me, it will be we we we (all the way home) <---------------- terrible joke sorry
2 Chronicles 7:14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (Read Chapter)
