KEEP A GOOD CONSCIENCE - March 12, 2009
Conscience is a spiritual organ. When we do something right, we feel good. When we do something wrong, we feel bad. It's not very complicated. A problem intervenes. Conscience becomes dulled and seared. It does not operate properly.
The Christian faith has to do with conscience. "The goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith" (1 Timothy 1:5). To have a good conscience we must be cleansed through faith in the sacrifice of Christ in payment for personal sins and personal sinfulness. Hebrews 9:14 asks, "How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
Once your conscience is clear through faith in Christ, you need to "keep a good conscience" (1 Peter 3:16). How do you do this? You must live appropriately. This means learning God's ways. Jesus says, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments" (John 14:15). So we must read the Bible and follow Christ.
If we fail, which we will do, and feel bad, we must again flee to Christ. Here is the promise. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). |
