One cannot read Romans 12:2 and NOT think about George Orwell's "Animal Farm"! In that classic story, a group of animals, lead by the pigs, stage an uprising against the humans who have enslaved them. The final scene of the book is the humans and pigs having a meeting to try to negotiate a lasting peace, and as the other animals look through the windows at the meetings, they can no longer tell the difference between the animals and humans seated around the table! They had conformed; became just like what they set out to change. All too often, the church has become a pit of confomity! We look to the secular business world as the standard by which we measure the church's success. We see all around us how "Christians" stage boycott's of the worship service and offering plate when they are unhappy. The message is clear; they are customers, consumers and clients and Christianity and church membership is the product that the church is trying to "sell." But a Biblical view of the church reveals that we are not the clients to be served, but called to be servants. The people are the product, not the clients of the church! When we are transformed, then we go out into the world as salt and light; the vessels through which God's love is brought to a lost and broken world. Part of how we point the world away from its destructive path toward what God would have for it is by being different. If we conform, we have no voice! Don't sell out! Rebel! Refuse to conform! 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. |
